Day 266 - 20 Jun 96 - Page 05
A. The percentages, to work out the percentage of calories
in fat, as I am sure you are aware, you have to multiply by
9.

Q. Yes, I understand that, and you have just done that maths?
A. Yes. Exactly, yes

MS. STEEL: All the figures in the brackets after the fat
grammes are your figures are they?
A. Those are the figures that I calculated at the time,
yes.

Q. And meal combination 2 is on the same page. That would be
the other one that you looked at?
A. Yes.

Q. It actually says 706 calories but all the other details are
the same. If you leave this document open but if we go
back to the statement. Reading on: "The United Kingdom
Government recommends a diet containing a maximum of 35 per
cent of energy as fat which is much lower than a typical
McDonald's meal of 45 per cent fat. (Some McDonald's meals
contain 47 per cent fat - for example meal combination
5."

Is that a calculation you made yourself?
A. Whilst I was doing calculations I picked on the first
two, so they are in no particular order and I just thought
I would check to make sure that the figures were roundabout
correct they had done and that was another one they did at
the time, yes.

Q. Right. "The United Kingdom Government fat recommendations
are moderate compared to other international reports, such
as the World Health Organisation which recommends 15-35 per
cent energy as fat."

If I just hand up, she has actually got -- I do not
know whether it is a more recent or older version, but it
has got exactly the same information on the particular page
I am referring to. If you just refer us to where you got
those.

MR. MORRIS: It is the WHO pamphlet, page 116. We have looked
at it a number of times. (Handed)
A. Page 116. Yes.

MS. STEEL: Is that where you got the figures from?
A. Yes. That is where I got the figures from, yes.

Q. Right. The recommendations of 35 per cent by the United
Kingdom Government and 15-30 per cent recommended by the
World Health Organisation, do you have any view on those
targets?
A. Yes. The United Kingdom Government target 35 per cent
is really an arbitrary figure picked out because the
Government decided that they might be able to achieve that
in the current way things are now. The actual target that
would benefit peoples' health would be nearer the 15-30 per
cent that is recommended by the World Health Organisation.
