3.0 Installation

• System Software 7.0 or later.
• If you are using a System Software version earlier than 7.5, you will need to obtain and install the Thread Manager 2.1 extension.
• Either MacTCP 2.0.6 or later, or Open Transport 1.1.1. You can download Open Transport from the internet with any FTP program - hint, hint. The URL is <http://www.apple.com > and from there look for links to the Open Transport pages. Open Transport is also included as part of the MacOS 7.6 release.
• If you are using a modem to connect to the internet, you will need to install the appropriate network software for SLIP or PPP access such as "MacPPP", "FreePPP" or "Open Transport/PPP 1.0". All of these are available on the internet and on the major online services. Open Transport/PPP 1.0 is also included as part of the MacOS 7.6 release.
• You may also need to configure (or have someone else configure) the TCP/IP control panel (Open Transport) or MacTCP control panel ("classic networking") for your Internet Service Provider. If you have already connected to the internet on your computer and you have obtained your e-mail or surfed some web pages, then you already have this set up correctly. If not, then nowadays many ISPs provide you with a disk which installs this information for you (since it can get quite hairy trying to set it up while you are on the phone to the technical guy). Ask your ISP for help if you are unsure about this.

• MacOS 7.5, upgraded to 7.5.5, or MacOS 7.6 or MacOS 8.0. If you have MacOS 7.5 to 7.5.3, you can download the 7.5.5 upgrade from the internet with any FTP program - hint, hint! The URL is <http://www.apple.com > and from there look for links to the MacOS pages.
• If you are using a System Software version after or including System 7 Pro but prior to version 7.5, you should also install the Macintosh Drag and Drop extensions. This will allow you to drag files from the Finder to NetFinder and vice versa, as well as letting you drag bookmarks from the Finder or any text window to NetFinder and vice versa.
• Internet Config 1.3. Why? Because NetFinder uses several of its features to make your internet surfing a much more pleasant and, dare we say, cooler, experience. Here are several reasons for using IC 1.3:
  1. it provides the mapping information needed by NetFinder so that FTP files are displayed with an icon and file kind information that is more understandable rather than "folder" and "document". This allows you to quickly see what type of files are in a folder. For example, it lets you easily distinguish between a binhex file and a JPEG file.
  2. this same information is also used when uploading files to correctly encode the files in the correct format.
  3. it provides the default download folder location. When you double click a file icon, NetFinder tries to download it to the folder you specify in Internet Config (it will download to the Desktop if you don't specify a folder but you may find the your desktop gets crowded very quickly).
  
  NetFinder will run without Internet Config, but all of the icons in the display listing window will be displayed as folder icons and generic file icons instead of the icons which correspond to a specific file format, e.g. a .gif, .jpg, .zip, .sit, .hqx or .bin file.

  To install IC 1.3, first open the Internet Config application. When it appears, select the "Install Extension" option from the "Extension" menu. If the "Install Extension" option is dimmed, then you probably already have an "Internet Config Extension" file installed in your Extensions folder (which is in your System Folder), in which case you should check that it is at least version 1.3.
  To check its version, open your Extensions folder by going to the Finder and double clicking your hard disk icon. Look for the System Folder icon and double click it. In the window that appears, double click the Extensions folder icon. When the Extensions folder opens, look for the "Internet Config Extension" file (hint: try selecting "by name" from the View menu if you can't see it). Click the file once and then select "Get Info" from the File menu. Look near the middle just above the comment box. There is a line which says what version it is.
  If it is earlier than 1.3, you should drag the extension to the Trash and then double click the Internet Config application program and select "Install Extension" from the Extension menu. This will then install the version 1.3 extension.

• set the FTP helper (in the Helpers panel) to NetFinder - this will make IC use NetFinder when it tries to open FTP URLs. For example, when you click a FTP link in Internet Explorer
  
• your e-mail address (in the Email panel), which is used in anonymous FTP logins
  
• the info-mac & umich mirrors closest to you (in the File Transfer panel). Choosing a mirror site close to you will reduce net traffic and give you faster downloads since the information does not need to travel as far
  

• the default FTP download folder (in the File Transfer panel). The default is the desktop but you may want a more convenient location
  
• the PORT/PASV setting (in the Firewalls panel). Some networks require that the passive connection mode be used for FTP sessions
  
• file mappings (in the File Mappings panel). For example, you may prefer downloaded text files to use a different program instead of Internet Config's default
