PHOTODELUXE 1.0 WINDOWS README This document contains important last-minute product information not included in your Adobe PhotoDeluxe documentation. This document contains information on the following topics: * INITIALIZATION AND PREFERENCES FILES * MSVCRT20.DLL AND OTHER SHARED RESOURCES * WINDOWS 3.1x USAGE NOTES * WINDOWS 95 USAGE NOTES * WINDOWS NT USAGE NOTES * OS/2 WARP USAGE NOTES * ACQUIRING IMAGES FOR PHOTODELUXE: PHOTOCD, TWAIN, AND UMAX * INCOMPATIBILITIES WITH UTILITIES AND DEVICE DRIVERS * OTHER NOTES INITIALIZATION AND PREFERENCES FILES If you encounter errors while launching or operating PhotoDeluxe, they can often be remedied by recreating PhotoDeluxe's preferences files: To recreate PhotoDeluxe for Windows' preferences files: 1. Quit PhotoDeluxe 2. Rename or delete the PD.PSP and CCOLORSD files, located in the Photodlx\\Prefs subdirectory (PhotoDeluxe's initialization file (PD.INI) should also located in the Photodlx\\Prefs subdirectory). 3. Relaunch PhotoDeluxe NOTE: Custom preferences (e.g., disabled clue cards, long menus, etc.) will need to be reset. MSVCRT20.DLL AND OTHER SHARED RESOURCES Win32s version 1.30.167, TWAIN, TWAIN_32, Kodak PhotoCD, and the MSVCRT20.DLL file are shared resources; several applications in addition to PhotoDeluxe may require their presence in order to operate properly. Installing or uninstalling applications that require these delete or replace of one or more of these shared resources. If Windows returns the error "cannot find MSCVRT20.DLL" or "MSCVRT20.DLL could not be found in the specified path" when launching PhotoDeluxe in Windows 3.1x, 95, or NT, ensure that you have the correct version of the MSCVRT20.DLL file for your operating system, and that its file size, and date match the chart below. Operating System Version File Size Date Windows 3.1x 2.10.000 244,736 1/20/95 Windows 95 2.11.000 253,952 7/11/95 Windows NT 2.11.000 253,952 2/23/95 When you install PhotoDeluxe under Windows 95, the PhotoDeluxe installer does not install the MSVCRT20.DLL file because it is a part of the Windows 95 installation. Another application's installer may install a duplicate of the MSVCRT20.DLL file, or overwrite Windows 95's version of the MSVCRT20.DLL file with a version that may be incompatible with PhotoDeluxe. If you need to reinstall the MSCVRT20.DLL file, it is located in the win95_02.cab Cabinet file. Contact Microsoft for information about extracting compressed files from their Cabinet file format. When PhotoDeluxe is installed under Windows 3.1x, and you run the PhotoDeluxe uninstall feature, it does not remove the following list of shared resources because they may be needed by other programs: Win32s 1.30.167, TWAIN, TWAIN_32, Kodak PhotoCD, and MSVCRT20.DLL; if you wish to remove them, you must manually uninstall them. WINDOWS 3.1X USAGE NOTES Adjusting the Smartdrv.exe memory setting: If your copy of PhotoDeluxe generates an error message stating that not enough RAM is available, you should add or adjust the Initial Cache Setting (INITCACHESIZE) value in the Smartdrv.exe line of your Autoexec.BAT file. This is especially important on systems running Win 3.1x with 8 MB of RAM. To do this: 1. Open your Autoexec.BAT file in an editor (e.g., Write) 2. Locate the line that contains the text "smartdrv.exe" 3. If there is no number after the phrase "smartdrv.exe", then put 256 such that the line now includes "smartdrv.exe 256". For more information about this and any other settings in your Autoexec.bat file, see your DOS and Windows documentation. The Win32S Subsystem: To run PhotoDeluxe under Windows 3.1x, PhotoDeluxe requires the installation of the Microsoft Win32s subsystem. Win32s enables 32-bit applications like PhotoDeluxe to run under a 16-bit operating system like Windows 3.1x. When you install under Windows 3.1x and select Typical Install, Compact Install, or check the Program Files option under Custom Install, Adobe PhotoDeluxe Setup installs the Win32s subsystem (version 1.30 build 167) automatically, unless a newer version is present on your system. Setup overwrites older versions of Win32s on your system, but leaves newer versions untouched. When you install PhotoDeluxe, the PhotoDeluxe installer adds the "SHARE.EXE" line to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you have a reference to "SHARE.EXE" in a LH (load high) line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, PhotoDeluxe stills adds a separate "SHARE.EXE" line. This causes the system, when booting, to display the message "SHARE.EXE already loaded". You can delete the separate "SHARE.EXE" line that PhotoDeluxe adds to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to prevent the system from displaying this message. WINDOWS 95 USAGE NOTES Video: If you are running video in 640x480 mode, Adobe recommends that you uncheck the "Always on Top" option on the Windows Taskbar. This prevents the Taskbar from overlapping and obscuring the bottom of PhotoDeluxe's application panel. "Disappearing" Guidelines: When you change magnification using the magnification tool in some of the Guided Activities templates (e.g., covers, cards) the guidelines may seem to disappear. If you change the magnification again, using the magnification tool, the guidelines will reappear. Virtual Memory: If you experience memory errors or errors saving a PhotoDeluxe document, Adobe recommends that you change the virtual memory minimum and maximum settings in Windows 95 to twice the amount of RAM on your system. For example, on a system with 32 MB RAM, set the minimum and maximum values in Control Panel > System > Performance > Virtual Memory to 64 MB. Setting Windows 95's virtual memory to fixed values prevents Windows 95 from using all of the available hard disk space for its Virtual Memory, which helps ensure that you have available hard disk space for PhotoDeluxe's scratch disk. For optimum performance, designate a partition or hard disk other than where Windows 95 is installed as PhotoDeluxe's primary scratch disk. Hold Photo images and the delete button: Images deleted from Hold Photo do not go to the Recycle Bin; they are deleted. There is no way to restore deleted Hold Photo images. WINDOWS NT USAGE NOTES 16-bit Plugins: Most 16-bit plug-in modules do not work under Windows NT because they are not written to operate in a 32-bit operating environment. The following 16-bit plug-ins, included with PhotoDeluxe, will not work with Windows NT for that reason: Kodak DC40/50, After Dark, KPT Glass Lens, KPT Smudge, and Snappy. Must have 32-bit TWAIN: Windows NT requires a 32-bit TWAIN source module to scan images, and will not work with scanner software designed for Windows 3.1x. If you experience problems when trying to scan under Windows NT, try using the scanner manufacturer's TWAIN_32 source module. Contact the scanner manufacturer for information on the availability of 32-bit versions of scanning modules. See also SCANNING WITH TWAIN AND TWAIN_32 in this ReadMe file. Compatibility: PhotoDeluxe for Windows is designed to run under Windows NT for Intel-based systems only. It is not designed to for, nor was it tested with, the other Windows NT platforms such as Windows NT for DEC Alpha or Windows NT for PowerPC. OS/2 WARP USAGE NOTES PhotoDeluxe for Windows is not designed to run under, nor was it tested with, the IBM OS/2 Warp operating system. ACQUIRING IMAGES FOR PHOTODELUXE PhotoCD: Under Windows 3.1x, SHARE.EXE must be loaded for PhotoDeluxe to open PhotoCD files. Also under Windows 3.1x, to read PhotoCD disks reliably, you must disable CD-ROM disk caching. To disable CD-ROM disk-caching: In the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, modify the SMARTDRV.EXE line using one of two options: SMARTDRV.EXE /U (to turn off disk-caching for all CD-ROM). SMARTDRV.EXE E- (where E is the CD-ROM drive letter, to turn off disk-caching for a specific CD-ROM). Consult your DOS documentation for information about Smartdrive. Scanning with TWAIN and TWAIN_32: PhotoDeluxe supports the 16-bit TWAIN and the new 32-bit TWAIN_32 standards for scanning. To use TWAIN under Windows 3.1x, SMARTDRV.EXE must be loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Note that Windows NT requires 32-bit TWAIN source modules, and does not work with scanner software designed for Windows 3.1x. Contact the scanner manufacturer for information on the availability of Windows NT-compatible TWAIN source modules. When selecting a TWAIN or TWAIN_32 source, ensure that you use the correct scanner driver. Both 16-bit and 32-bit scanner drivers appear in the Acquire > Select Source dialog box. To avoid unexpected results, ensure that you use TWAIN when working with 16-bit sources, and TWAIN_32 when working with 32-bit sources. Contact the scanner manufacturer for information on whether your scanner driver is 16-bit or 32-bit. Occasionally a scanner driver does not appear in PhotoDeluxe's Select TWAIN Source dialog box after being installed. To correct this situation: 1. Open Windows Explorer or another file management utility. 2. Navigate to the Windows/Twain directory. NOTE: At this point you should see a subdirectory within the Twain directory. This directory is created when the scanner driver is installed, and its name usually corresponds to the scanner driver or manufacturer's name. 3. Open the scanner subdirectory. 4. Copy all the files from within the scanner subdirectory out into the Twain directory. Restart PhotoDeluxe and select Acquire > Select TWAIN Source; the scanner driver should now appear as an option in the Select TWAIN Source dialog box. UMAX Scanners: You may experience low conventional memory problems scanning with some UMAX scanners, due to the conventional memory requirements of some of these scanners. UMAX has developed a utility called UMAXMEM.SYS to correct the problem, available on the UMAX BBS at 510-651-2550. Or contact your UMAX scanner Technical Support provider for more information. INCOMPATIBILITIES WITH UTILITIES AND DEVICE DRIVERS The Logitech Mouse Driver: The current version of the Logitech mouse driver allows programming of the middle and right mouse buttons to accelerate operations in Windows applications. If you try to assign one of these keys to the Undo function, note that the Logitech driver maps the Undo function to the Alt+Backspace keystroke. In PhotoDeluxe, the shortcut for Undo is Ctrl+Z. (Alt+Backspace clears a selection.) Pressure-sensitive Pens and Tablets: Under Windows 3.1x, PhotoDeluxe supports only pressure-sensitive digitizing tablets that are 100% compatible with the Microsoft PenWindows specification. Under Windows NT and Windows 95, PhotoDeluxe supports only pressure-sensitive digitizing tablets that are 100% compatible with the WinTab32 specification. PhotoDeluxe does not have built-in controls for pressure sensitive tablets; use the utility supplied with the pen/tablet to control pen or tablet functions. For the latest driver software, contact the tablet manufacturer at one of the following: Wacom Technology Corporation: 800-922-6613 Mutoh Corporation (formerly Kurta): 602-276-5533 CalComp: 800-458-5888 Hitachi: 408-735-0577 PhotoDeluxe does not support the Wacom tilt feature. OTHER NOTES Compressed Drives and Virtual Memory: Adobe recommends that you do not set either the Windows swap file (virtual memory) or PhotoDeluxe's scratch disk to a compressed disk drive. Running PhotoDeluxe Over a Network: PhotoDeluxe was not designed to be operated from a network server. Further, PhotoDeluxe was not designed to run under, nor was it tested with, Windows multi-launched from a network server. For best results, make sure that each Windows machine has its own copy of Windows and PhotoDeluxe installed on the hard disk. After Dark: PhotoDeluxe installs the After Dark installer; it does not install After Dark. To install After Dark, double-click on the SETUP.EXE file located in the AftrDark subdirectory of the Photodlx directory and follow the directions. (c) 1989-96 Adobe Systems Incorporated.
