THelpTopic Using the Mouse Using a mouse or other pointing device is pretty straightforward. If your mouse does not work, please exit the program and verify that your mouse driver has been loaded. D The mouse interface works much like Microsoft's Windows 3.1 operating environment: clicking on the upper-left corner of a Window cancels it; clicking on the upper-right corner of the window maximizes or minimizes the window. If a window has vertical or horizontal scroll bars, you can use the mouse to scroll the display. Menu items and dialog box buttons are selected with a single click. To close the file viewer, click on the "close" button in the upper-left corner of the window, or press [Esc]. THelpTopic The Open a File Dialog Box The Open a File dialog box contains an input box, a file list, a file information panel, the standard button Cancel, one other action button (Open), plus a history list that's attached to the Name inputbox. THelpTopic Name The Name input box is where you enter the name of the file to load, or the file-name mask to use as a filter for the Files list box (for example, *.TXT). The INSTALL diskette comes with a text file called README.TXT. This file contains last-minute information that should be read. If you don't wish to read it now, you can look at it later by selecting README from the menu. The file may also be printed from DOS. THelpTopic Operating Status This dialog box displays various pieces of information about your Hercules product. a In addition to the hardware informaton, there are two pieces of information about your monitor: Monitor name: The monitor name you selected. Monitor class: A monitor class defines a set of resolutions and refresh rates it supports. For detail class information about your monitor, see the MONITORS.TXT file. See Also: ! Use this dialog box to install the files necessary for the basic operation of your Hercules product. First, select the source drive for the Installation Diskette (usually A: or B:), and then select the destination directory (we recommend C:\HERCULES). Then, select OKAY, CANCEL or EXIT PROGRAM. You may wish to load the indicated utilities automatically whenever you turn on your PC. If this is what you'd like, select YES. This value is expressed in kilohertz (kHz) and can be found in your monitor's manual. Monitor types are defined by the maximum horizontal scan rate supported by the monitor. This value is expressed in kilohertz (kHz) and may be found in the monitor's documentation. Do not confuse this with the vertical refresh rate, expressed in hertz (Hz). If you are unsure of your monitor's maximum horizontal scan rate, select "31.5 kHz" or "VGA-only Monitor". Examine the labels of your diskettes and insert the correct one, changing the drive if necessary. If you do not wish to continue, select Cancel (or hit ESC). THelpTopic Windows Driver Successfully Copied The Windows drivers have been successfully copied into your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory. The next time you run Windows' SETUP program (either from Windows or from DOS), you will see an entry for the Hercules product you purchased. Select this entry to tell Windows about the Hercules Windows 3.1 drivers. Since the necessary driver files have been copied to the hard disk, you will not need to supply any diskettes. THelpTopic Install Main Software Choose this menu item to install the main operating software. If you have never installed the software before, this is the place to start. After the main software, you should select a monitor type, then install the application drivers. THelpTopic Select Monitor Type Choose this menu item to select your monitor type. THelpTopic Operating Status Choose this menu item to see the operating status of your Hercules product. THelpTopic Test Program Choose this menu item to run the TEST program. THelpTopic Display Status Log The status log shows you what's going on. If you close the status log, you will lose all its information. THelpTopic About Install Choose this menu item to see the "About INSTALL" dialog box. THelpTopic Warning Apparently, your PC's motherboard will not reliably support 16-bit ISA memory cycles. Because of this, the Hercules Graphite will operate in 8-bit mode and will use the D000:1F00 - D000:1F7F address range. If you have any other 8-bit interface cards, they must not be located in ANY D-segment addresses. There are no restrictions on the locations of 16-bit interface cards. THelpTopic Copy Windows Fonts The Windows font files (eg. VGASYS.FON) contained on the Hercules Windows drivers diskette are in English language. When you let the INSTALL program copy these files for you, you will not need to provide any Microsoft Windows diskettes when you run Windows' SETUP later. However, if you want to preserve your original Windows font files, for example, your font files are in a non-English language, then you should not allow INSTALL to copy the files for you.
