Using Distort Effect in a movie

Using Distort Effect in a Director® movie

Once you have added a Distort Effect cast member to the Director® cast, using it in your movie is as simple as dragging it to the stage (or score) and positioning it where you want it. You can then use the Distort Effect sprite just as you use other sprites. Creating a Director movie is largely a process of defining where sprites appear on the stage, when they appear in the movie, how they behave, and what their properties are.

When working with a Distort Effect sprite on the stage, keep these points in mind:

You can use Lingo to add behaviors to a Distort Effect sprite, such as changing from one effect to another on a mouse click. See the wdeType property for syntax and sample code.
It is possible to have more than one effect (sunrise, clouds, and a reflection, for example) in a movie, all using the same cast member.
Try combining a Distort Effect sprite with a Natural Effect sprite in the same movie. For example, you might take a photo, add a sunrise natural effect, flip the same photo and add a reflection distort effect, then position the reflection effect below the sunrise effect, so that the sunrise scene appears reflected in the water.

Using Distort Effect in a Shockwave movie

Shockwave lets you view high-quality, streaming content in a Web browser. You can save Director movies that incorporate distort effects as Shockwave movies, then use the effects anywhere on your Web site with minimal impact on bandwidth, because the effects run locally on the client browser.

For information about creating Shockwave movies, see the following Director 7 Help topics:

Guided Tour of Director 7. The Guided tour overview subtopic references the Guided Tour movie Putting movies on the web. View this movie for a demonstration and tutorial on Shockwave movies. The Creating a Shockwave movie and using Afterburner subtopic explains how to develop content for Shockwave movies, including the use of EMBED and OBJECT HTML tags to make a movie play from a page on the web.

Distributing Movies. Subtopics under this heading give details about preparing a movie for distribution, creating projectors and Shockwave movies, and managing Xtras for distributed movies. The subtopic Managing Xtras for distributed movies explains that Xtras which create and manage cast members, such as Distort Effect, must be present when the movie using them runs. Other related subtopics include About distribution formats, Creating Shockwave movies, and Creating projectors.

The Distort Effect Xtra add-in is supported in Shockwave as long as it is available on the user's system. However, since Distort Effect is not included with the Shockwave player, it must be installed on a user's system before the movie plays. You can create a Shocked site that lets visiting users download the Distort Effect Xtra to view your Shockwave movie's effects.

Director 7 provides a mechanism for automatically installing the Distort Effect Xtra in the appropriate browser support folder on your visitor's system, if necessary. To activate this mechanism, check the Download if Needed option in the Modify > Movies > Xtras dialog box before saving the file as a Shockwave movie. For more information, consult the Distributing Movies—About distribution formats topic in Director 7 Help.
Refer also to the sample Lingo in Macromedia technote 12233, entitled How can Shockwave tell if an Xtra is present. The sample Lingo verifies that the user has the right Xtras installed, and if not, takes them to a Web site to download them. If you choose to make use of this Lingo, substitute "wdedis.x32" in the FindXtra statement to check for the presence of the Distort Effect Xtra.
Visit the Intel® Web Design Effects 1.5 for Macromedia site (http://developer.intel.com/ial/wde) for more information about locating and downloading the Shockwave runtime Xtra for Distort Effect (wdedis.x32).

Using Distort Effect in a Projector movie

To see which Xtras are required by a movie, select Modify > Movie > Xtras.

Xtras appearing in the list shown in the dialog box are automatically included when a projector is created, provided the Include in Projector box is checked for that Xtra.
If you want the Distort Effect Xtra included, make sure the box is checked for wdedis.x32.
