MMTrek v0.9 simulates a Multimedia-screensaver-module for Windows (TM) v3.1 It displays one of five different animated pictures of starships from StarTrek (NCC 1701, NCC 1701A, Excalibur, NCC1701D). It can be configured to play wav-sounds at start, end, fly-by of a starship and as a chime. Uses MS-compatible passwords. Works with SPEAKER.DRV. Windows will keep printing even when MMTREK is active and PRINTMAN's priority is set at "low". SVGA/800*600 with at least 256 colours is recommended, runs also under vanilla VGA. Requires VGA, PKUNZIP v2.04g and VBRUN300.DLL (not included). Installation: ------------- 1. Unpack the archive using PKUNZIP v2.04g. 2. Copy CMDIALOG.VBX and CTL3D.DLL to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM-Directory. 3. Copy the file MMTREK.SCR to your Windows-directory. Start CONTROL PANEL, double-click the DESKTOP-icon and choose MM-Trek as screensaver. Configuration: -------------- Start CONTROL PANEL, double-click the DESKTOP-icon, choose MM-Trek as screensaver, and click the "Setup..." button. 1. Speedfactor: Choose a speedfactor of 1 to 9. The higher the factor, the faster and more jumpy the animations will be (on my 486/33, Speedstar HiColor at 800*600 and 256 colours, I use "3"). 2. Timer: Determines how many seconds (10-30) pause there will be between the animations. 3. Sounds: Determines the WAV-files which are to be played at start and end of MMTREK, when a ship is flying by and when the time is nn:15, nn:30, nn:45, or nn:00. The chime-sound will be played at these times 1 to 4 times respectively. The input works according to the GIGO-principle: You have to specify complete names for the WAV-files, including drive, path, and extension. MMTrek does not check whether the file exits. You can also double-click in the appropriate Textbox to choose the file from the common dialogue. If you do not want any sound to be played at a specific event, empty the according Textbox or leave it empty. 4. Password: MM Trek supports the same passwords as they are used by other MS-compatible screen savers. To change the password, type in the old password and twice the new password. If Password is set to active, you can end the MMTrek screen saver only after typing the password or resetting your system. (If you find another way, please let me know.) NOTE ---- MM-Trek is actually not a Windows screen saver module, it merely simulates one. Original Windows-Screen savers get their information (when to start, when to stop etc) from Windows. I found no solution yet how to access these _Windows_-functions and messages from Visual Basic 3.00, since they require SCRNSAVE.LIB, a library for C. So I wrote MMTREK as an application, which is _started_ by Windows _3.1_ like a screen saver would be, and which monitors activities like Keyboard- and Mouse-Events itself and disables itself if it encounters some. Windows, however, does not know that a screen-saver is running. It seems that for these reasons Norton Desktop does not recognize MMTREK.SCR as a screen saver. If you have a programme which chooses different screen savers randomly or cyclically, this program would start another screen saver even if MMTrek is laready active. Besides that, I found no other flaws.
