To search the Internet

To Do this
Use any search provider
  1. Click the Search button or the Search tab.
  2. Select a search provider from the menu.
Use the Search page On the Go menu, click Search the Internet.
Use the Address Bar
  1. Click in the Address Bar.
  2. Type go or ? and your keyword. For example, to find information on cats, type go cats or ? cats.
  3. Press RETURN.

    The default search engine is http://www.yahoo.com. You cannot use a different search engine with this feature. This link points to a site that is not under the control of Microsoft. Please read our disclaimer.

Use Apple Sherlock
  1. On the toolbar, click the Apple Sherlock button.
  2. Click Open Apple Sherlock.
  3. Click the Search Internet tab.
  4. Type words relating to your search in the Words field.
Use Find Similar Sites
  1. Open the site in the browser that you want to match.
  2. On the toolbar, click the Apple Sherlock button.
  3. Click Find Similar Sites.

What is Apple 8.5 Sherlock?

Apple Sherlock is a powerful new Find tool provided by Mac OS version 8.5, and supported by Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5 Macintosh Edition. Apple Sherlock lets you search your hard disk for file names or content, and lets you search the entire World Wide Web. Apple Sherlock also lets you find other sites similar to one that you are viewing. To start Apple Sherlock from Internet Explorer, click the Apple Sherlock button on the toolbar, and then click Open Apple Sherlock. Apple Sherlock contains built-in Help, which you can open by clicking the Help button (?) on the Apple Sherlock dialog box.

To summarize Web page information to the Clipboard

  1. Open the Web site that you want to summarize.
  2. Click the Apple Sherlock button, and then click Summarize to Clipboard.

    You can view the summary by clicking Show Clipboard from the Mac Edit menu.

To search for text on a page

  1. On the Edit menu, click Find.
  2. Type the text you want to find.
  3. Change any settings as needed.
  4. Click Find.
  5. To continue searching for the same text, click Find Again from the Edit menu.

To search the favorites and history lists

  1. Click Open History from the Go menu, or Organize Favorites from the Favorites menu.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Find.
  3. Type the text for which you are searching in the Find box.
  4. Select the Match Case or Start from Top check box, as needed.
  5. Click OK.
