To create a collection of favorite pages

Display the page you want to add to your collection of favorite pages.
Do one of the following:
- Click the Favorites tab, and then click the Add to Favorites button on the Favorites pane.
- On the Favorites menu, click Add Page to Favorites.

Tips

To add the current page to the Favorites Bar, press the - SHIFT keys as you click Add Page To Favorites from the Favorites menu.
You can click New Favorite from the Favorites menu to open the Get Info dialog box in which you can type the address of the page you want to add to your favorites list.
When you add a page with frames to your favorites list, selecting the favorite will display the page with its frames in the original state. You can add comments to the favorites item to help you remember how to navigate to a particular frame on the page.

The icons in the favorites list describe each item.

	An HTML document on the Internet (HTTP protocol)
	A document on your computer (FILE protocol)
	An FTP site (FTP protocol)
	A mail document (MAILTO protocol)
	An Internet newsgroup (NEWS protocol)
	An active channel
	A Web page that has been designated a Page Holder Favorite

To organize your favorites list

Do one of the following:

On the Favorites pane, click the Organize button, and then click Open Favorites Window.

From the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.

To Do this

Add a new folder On the Favorites menu, click New Folder. Folders are useful for organizing pages by topic. For example, you could create a folder named Art Pages for storing information about art exhibits and reviews.

Add a divider On the Favorites menu, click New Divider.

Move favorite pages, folders, and dividers Drag the page, folder, or divider. A black bar indicates where the item will appear when you release the mouse button.

Get information about a favorite page Click the favorite page icon to select it, and then, on the File menu, click Get Info.

Sort by address Point to the Address column heading, and click.

Sort by name Point to the Name column heading, and click.

Resize columns Position the pointer over the cross-hatched pattern (note that the mouse pointer changes to a hand) and drag left or right.

Close the Favorites window Click the Close box in the upper-left corner.

To	Do this
Add a new folder	On the Favorites menu, click New Folder. Folders are useful for organizing pages by topic. For example, you could create a folder named Art Pages for storing information about art exhibits and reviews.

Move favorite pages, folders, and dividers	Drag the page, folder, or divider. A black bar indicates where the item will appear when you release the mouse button.

To send authorization information automatically

Some sites require that you have an account with them before you can access the site. You can have Internet Explorer automatically send your account information so that you don't have to enter your account information each time you visit the site.

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Select the favorite item.
On the File menu, click Get Info.
Click the Account tab.
Type the information requested.

Note

Anyone who has access to your computer will be able visit the site by using your login information.

To delete a favorite page

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Click the item's icon to select it. To select multiple items, hold down the SHIFT key and select the item you want to delete.
Do one of the following:
- Press the - DELETE key on the keyboard.
- Drag the item or items to the Trash.

To rename a favorite page

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Click the item name, and then type a new name.

To import your favorites list

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Click the Favorites window to ensure that it's active.
On the File menu, click Import.
Select the HTML file you want to import.
The imported file appears in a folder with the same name as the file at the bottom of the Favorites window.

Tips

You can also import a file by dragging it from the Finder to the Favorites window.
To use your Anarchie Bookmarks, import the Bookmarks file in your Anarchie folder.
To use your Netscape Navigator^TM Bookmarks, import the Bookmarks.html file in the System Folder/Preferences/Netscape folder.
To keep track of your favorite pages, you can organize them into folders.

To export your favorites list

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Click the favorites window to ensure that it's active.
On the File menu, click Export.
Type a name for the file.
Select the location where you want the file to be saved.

Tips

You can export just the contents of a folder in your favorites list by double-clicking the folder to open it and then clicking Export.
To keep track of your favorite pages, you can organize them into folders.

To create an alias to a page on the desktop

If the page is not on your favorites list, add it.
On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Drag a page from the Favorites window to the desktop.

To add a page to the Favorites Bar

If the page is not on your favorites list, add it.
On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Drag an item to the Toolbar Favorites folder.

Tips

To add the current page to the Favorites Bar, press the - SHIFT keys as you click Add Page To Favorites from the Favorites menu.
You can drag an item directly from the Favorites window onto the Favorites Bar.
You can drag a link on a page onto the Favorites Bar.

To remove a page from the Favorites Bar

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Click the Toolbar Favorites folder to open it.
To keep the site in your favorites list but not on the Favorites Bar, drag the page out of the Toolbar Favorites folder. To remove the site from your favorites list completely, drag the page to the Trash.

What are subscriptions?

Subscriptions bring up-to-date Web content to you. When you subscribe to a site, Internet Explorer checks for new content, according to the schedule you specify. You can then choose either to be notified that there is new content available or have the updated content automatically download to your computer (for example, at night or when your computer is idle) so that you can view the pages at your convenience. Subscribing to a Web site does not require paying fees to the site.

You can schedule when you want to check for new content, and how you want to be notified of new content. You can also set up custom schedules and notify settings for individual sites.

Channels are another form of subscriptions. Channels are Web sites that are automatically updated on your computer according to a schedule specified by the content provider.

To subscribe to a page

You can subscribe to a favorite item without visiting it, or you can subscribe to a site that you find while you are browsing the Web. All subscriptions are automatically added to your favorites list.

To subscribe to a favorite item

If the Web site is a favorite item, click Organize Favorites from the Favorites menu.
Select the favorite item to which you want to subscribe.
On the File menu, click Get Info, and then click the Subscribe tab.
Select the Check this site for changes check box.

To subscribe to a site that you are viewing

On the Favorites menu, click Subscribe. This will also add the site to your favorites list.
If you want to use the default notify and schedule settings in preferences, click Subscribe. Otherwise, click Customize to open the Get Info dialog box so that you can customize the update schedule and notify settings for this site.

Tip

In the favorites list, all subscribed favorite items have a subscription icon. You can also subscribe to a favorite item by clicking the column beside the favorite item.
By default, your subscribed favorite items will be updated based on your Preferences. However, you can set up customized update schedules and notify settings for individual subscriptions.

To cancel a favorite page subscription

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Select the favorite item to which you want to unsubscribe.
On the File menu, click Get Info, and then click the Subscribe tab.
Clear the Check This Site For Changes check box.

Tip

In the favorites list, all subscribed favorite items have a subscription icon. You can also cancel a subscription by clicking the icon beside the favorite item.

To check for updates manually

On the Favorites menu, click Update Subscriptions.

To view the list of updated pages

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
The icon appears beside subscribed pages that have changed since you last visited them.
The icon appears besides pages that could not be checked for updates.

Notes

If you don't want to visit an updated subscribed page, and want to remove the icon, double-click the icon to open the Get Info dialog box.
To find out why a subscribed page could not be checked, double-click the icon, to open the Get Info dialog box, and then read the subscription messages.

To customize the notify setting and update schedule for a specific subscribed page

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Select the favorite item.

On the File menu, click Get Info, and then do one or both of the following.

To	Do this
To change the notify setting	Click the Notify tab. Click Use a customize notification for this site, and then select the check box that corresponds to how you want to be notified of changes.
To change the update schedule	Click the Schedule tab. Select the Use a custom schedule for this site check box. In the How Often area, click the option that corresponds to how often you want Internet Explorer to check the site for new content. In the Time Limits area, select a check box and type a date and time in the corresponding check box. You can further customize your setting by selecting the days you want to check.

Click OK.

To set up a subscribed page for offline browsing

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Select the subscribed item that you want to set up for offline browsing.
On the File menu, click Get Info, and then click the Offline tab.
Select the Download site for offline browsing check box.
Click Options, and select additional check boxes as needed.

What is a channel?

A channel is a Web site designed to deliver content from the Internet to your computer, similar to subscribing to a favorite Web site. A channel provider updates the content and delivers it to you on schedule in an organized way. Internet Explorer comes with some prepopulated channels, but you might come across channels that you want to add as you explore the Internet.

You can view the prepopulated channels from the Channels list in the Favorites menu.
You can create a custom update and notification setting for a channel.
You can set up a channel for offline browsing.

To add a channel

When you've come across a channel that you want to add to your channel list, click the Add Active Channel button on the page. The Add Active Channel dialog prompts you with buttons to Customize, Cancel, or Add the channel.

Do one of the following:

Click the Customize to open the Info for Channel dialog box, and enter the following information, as needed.

To	Do this
To change the notify setting	Click the Notify tab. Click Use a customize notification for this site, and then select the check box that corresponds to how you want to be notified of changes.
To change the update schedule	Click the Schedule tab. Select the Use a custom schedule for this site check box. In the How Often area, click the option that corresponds to how often you want Internet Explorer to check the site for new content. In the Time Limits area, click a check box and type a date and time in the corresponding check box. You can further customize your setting by selecting the days you want to check.

Click Cancel to cancel adding the channel to your Channels list.
Click Add to add the channel. You can customize the channel information later by clicking Organize Favorites from the Favorites menu, selecting the channel from the list, and then clicking Get Info from the File menu.

Open the Channels folder.
Drag the channel to the Trash.

To set up a channel for offline browsing

On the Favorites menu, click Organize Favorites.
Click the Channels folder to open it, and then click the channel.
On the File menu, click Get Info, and then click the Offline tab.
Select the Download channel for offline browsing check box.
Click Options and select the check boxes that correspond to the content you want to download.
To change the name of the file, type a new name in the Archive File box.
To change the location where the file will be saved, click Change Location.
