Betty Ann Russell (Saliba) Lioon, daughter of
Luther O. and Thelma Howard Russell, passed away to join her family
and friends in heaven on April 30, 2014.
She is predeceased by her parents; son, Jean Pierre Saliba; former
husband, Dr. Constantin Saliba; and two brothers, Donald Russell of
North Palm Beach, FL, and Luther (Sunny) Russell of Gastonia, NC.
Surviving children are Dr. Karl Constantin Saliba and granddaughter,
Catherine Marie of Roanoke, VA; Jean Pierre�s children, Elizabeth
Ann Whitfield Saliba of Washington, DC and Peter Constantin Saliba
of Richmond, VA; Charles Galloway Saliba and grandson, Charles
Constantin Saliba of Wilmington; Lisa Louise Saliba of Wilmington;
Caroline Saliba Keel and husband, Gary, of Oriental, NC; and
brother, Charles and wife, Shirley Russell, of Lake Oconee, GA; plus
many, many other cousins, nephews and nieces.
Born in Wilmington on December 2, 1928, Betty Ann, our �Southern
Belle� grew up with three loving brothers and graduated from New
Hanover High School where a friend once wrote in her yearbook that
Betty was always on the go, but not so much that she couldn�t stop
and chat. She attended Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg,
VA then married Dr. Constantin Saliba of Beirut, Lebanon on May 5,
1951. The five Saliba children were raised in Williamsburg, VA where
Betty headed up the March of Dimes and worked in the English Dept.
at the College of William and Mary.
Betty returned to her home in Wilmington in 1969 where she
volunteered for Crisis Line and the New Hanover Mental Health
Association of Wilmington. She was a member of the Church of Christ
where she enjoyed sharing her spiritual journey with her church
family. Betty happily spent her retirement years in Kure Beach, NC
where she devoted her leisure time to reading, bird watching, and
classic movies. Betty�s friends enjoyed her kind gracious spirit
during joyous visits at her beachside home.

Betty will be remembered for her celebratory spirit
and her love of antebellum traditions. She was dearly loved by her
five children, her five grandchildren, and her two
great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all until that joyous
occasion when all are reunited in heaven. The family would like to
thank Meals on Wheels and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their kindness
and dedicated service.
A memorial service will be held at Andrews Market Street Chapel on
Monday, May 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. followed by a private interment at
the cemetery.
The family will receive guests at Betty�s home in Kure Beach
starting at 3 p.m. |
