Students in the Talent Search (TS) program have the opportunity to put the pieces together by exploring career options, visiting college campuses, learning study skills, applying for college/financial aid/scholarships, and participating in the ACT/SAT test preparation. All services are free to qualified participants.
Talent Search is provided at McGregor School by a federal grant through the Department of Education. The purpose is to:
- identify youth with potential for postsecondary education
- encourage them to continue and graduate from secondary school
- enroll in programs of postsecondary education
Two-thirds of the 600 participants must be low income and first generation college students (with neither parent having a 4-year degree)
Since 1998 here are some accomplishments of the students in the Talent Search Program in McGregor:
- Total number of students served at McGregor: 157
- McGregor students in the program as of 9/1/10: 57
- TS seniors graduated from high school: 99% (the national goal is 74.9% according to the National Center for Education Statistics, 2008.)
- TS graduates in a postsecondary institution of their choice: 83% (the national average is 67% according to teh National Center for Education Statistics, 2007) Minnesota average is 70% according to the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, 2008)
- Fieldtrips and college campuses visited this past year: Duluth Omnimax Theatre, Concordia University, Hamline University, Bemidji State University, Itasca Community College, St. Scholastica
