Quickie instructions

Use the Today, Tomorrow, Week pushbuttons along the top to create a list of appointments and todos. You may pick a default tab (one that it always starts with) by going into the Appt Prefs from the menu. The Week pushbutton may also be used to pick a starting day for the weekly view. To do that, just tap it (while it shows the mm/dd) while it is currently active. That will bring up a date selector.

There are three types of content that show up in the list. Appointments are always first and then todos. Directly following the appointments it is also possible to find a list of untimed alarm events for that day (only in Today & Tomorrow lists). Untimed alarms are typically set for days in advance of an untimed event. Hot Date searches for untimed alarms up to 14 days in advance and adds them to the Today & Tomorrow lists as a reminder in case you missed the one-time dialog that Datebook provides.

Other hotspots on the screen include; tapping in the lower left will launch a program of your choosing. Tapping on an appointment or todo will also launch a program if you tap on the leftmost half of the list. Tapping on the rightmost half of the list will show more information about a particular appointment or todo. If a note is available for an appointment or todo, you may scroll it by dragging your finger within the field or using the pgup/pgdown hard buttons. To close the popup, you should tap outside of the popup.

One of the recent additions is a phone contacts list (phone icon). This lets you make a popup list of your favorite Address book items. It displays the item in the same way that Address book does. Tapping on an item will launch the Address book application (or equiv as defined for Contacts launch). By default the 'contacts launch' preference is set to the Address Book application. As we find enhanced versions of these, I would be happy to include support for them. Address+, AddressPro, Super Names, and TealPhone (V2.20 or higher) are also supported at this time. Please email me with your requests.

The pizza timer is a very simple add-on which I am going to enhance in the next version. The only thing that it does is schedule an alarm chime at the selected time period. Useful as a quick reminder for reheating pizza, or starting the dishwasher etc. You do not have to stay within Hot Date for the alarm to function.. just pick a time period and forget about it. If you want to cancel or change it, just pick "off" or select a new time period.

"Generally, Hot Date is a useful viewer, giving an effective display of your obligations for the day, particularly if you're not a user of To Do List priorities...The display of future untimed, alarmed events is excellent functionality that's not available in any other application, as is the frequent contact list." ( PalmUser magazine issue 2)

Update:

  • V1.3f - Week number feature added by Peter Engstrom; in Appt Prefs pick "7 days & Weekn." to get a week number in the week view. Also included is a bug fix from Frank Meus for the launch prefs screen (the list item wouldn't select in some cases). A Turkish language version is also included, by Selcuk Demiray and the Turkish Palm Users Group. Polish language version is included, by Radoslaw Brendel.
  • V1.3e - A contribution by Frank Meus; added little +/- to allow the week view to go prev/next. The double-tap warp is still there of course if you need to pick a specific week. Also a one-line bug fix that I found for untimed events list whereby events that had end-dates would erroneously show up on extra days.
  • V1.3d - Whoops, I didn't quite fix the last bug completely. The Untimed Alarms didn't respect the show/hide pref.
  • V1.3c - Bug fix for secret records so that the list cache gets rebuilt if the show/hide pref changes. I changed the file open code back to V1.26 code because of some problems with flash. Also I added Handspring's DateBk3 support (which only means that I added it to the safely "goto" launchable list). Added support for Super Names.
  • V1.3b - TealPhone (V2.20 or higher) support added, thanks to the TealPoint programmers! Also a work-around for some problems with extra SyncToDoDB files. 'Next 14, 21, 31 days' added for the item range in the ToDo Prefs.
  • V1.3a - A bug fix. There was a problem with long ToDo listings that caused an error. Also added a 'Next 7 days' item range in the ToDo prefs.
  • V1.3 - Phone contacts popup list allows you to have a short list of Address book items, an idea from Porter Glendinning. Speed improvements at startup, by caching the current view and optimizing file searching. Preference migration from V1.26. Also I fixed a bug in the Launch Prefs.
  • V1.26 - An alert user found a bug in the show tickmark routine. If the ToDo item range is "None of them" and there are no appointments, there will be an error. Thanks Mike Murray!
  • V1.25 - Ignore DateBk3 notes if they only contain flags. Picking "None of them" for the ToDo item range disables ToDos. Enable/disable the showing of past due non-completed ToDos. Extra Y/M/D format to help with the "today" title.
  • V1.24 - Added a date selection dialog to the "today" tab. Works like the one on the "week" tab. Tap it whilst it is active.
  • V1.23 - A user suggested that the untimed alarm should show on the list each day until the event. I like it! Thanks John Wu. It is now an option -- though I put it on the ToDo Prefs because I ran out of space.
  • V1.22 - I was asked to add support for DateBk3's "done" type of appointment. You can now pick an Appt Pref to show/hide the appointments that are marked as done with DateBk3.
  • V1.21 - Just a little bitty fix to the notes popup titles. There was a slight display problem if there was a newline in it.
  • V1.2 -
    • Small indicator (flashing vertical dash) next to the closest appointment.
    • Launch other programs besides the default datebook and todo applications. Optional hard button launching.
    • More information on the note popup. Such as from & to times and an alarm indication icon. Optional alarm & repeat icons on lists as well.
    • Ability to pick a week for the week view. This works by tapping on the week tab while it is already being shown. The "Week" text is replaced with the MM/DD (or prefs setting) while it is active.
    • ToDo category selection. This works via a popup list that is triggered by tapping on the right-side of the "To Do Items" line within the Today and Tomorrow lists. It indicates the current category in the right-side portion of that line. Tapping on the left-side of the "To Do Items" line cycles categories. ToDos can optionally be shown on the week view as well.
    • This is my favorite! An untimed events preview for the day. This is a part of the Today and Tomorrow lists that shows the untimed events silent alarm. In other words, untimed events that have an alarm are usually silent but they do popup a dialog based on midnight. This isn't very useful because you will usually see the dialog when you turn on the PalmPilot, but forget about it during the day. What is *useful* is to have a listing of these alarms for today so that you won't forget. i.e. a 7-day alarm for birthdays to allow you enough time for mailing a card.
  • V1.1 - Pick 7, 14, 21 or 31 day week view. Selectable time/date formats. Optionally show undated and completed ToDos.
  • V1.0 - Initial release. Two problems with it; it doesn't hide completed ToDos and the time/date formatting is inflexible.

Features:

  • Shows appointments and todos on the same screen.
  • Pizza timer.
  • Tested with Gremlins! (PalmOS2, PalmOS3, PalmOS3.1, PalmOS3.3)
