Programs

These programs are provided as a convenience. However, installation and support is your responsibility. Installing programs improperly can damage the software and/or operating system on your computer. Install at your own risk

Mac Users
The content is viewable on a Mac. However, Apologia does not provide technical support for this cd. We do post solutions on the support section of our site as Mac users contribute them to us. The CD has been used without problem on Mac OS X. It has also been used without problem with Virtual PC version 5.0 and above.

It is suggested that you use the non-asx version.


Linux Users
The content is viewable under Linux. However, Apologia does not provide technical support for this cd. We test the content using KDE running on Mandrake 8.0. We test under Opera, Mozilla, and Konquerer.

It is suggested that you use the non-asx version.

If you would like to contribute a how-to for different version of Linux we will post them on our website and include them on future releases with credits to those who contribute.


Troubleshooting
  1. Media Player Problems
    Includes:
    1. Bad File Association
      • Movies play but animations won't
      • Animations play but movies won't
      • Sound stops part way through
      • Says it is downloading codec but doesn't come down
      • Get error "Active X Viewer not installed"
      • Missing plug-in
    2. Sound and/or video compression is not installed
      Includes:
      • Cannot play back the video stream: no suitable decompressor was found
      • Video portion plays but sound doesn't
      • Sound plays but video doesn't
Media Player Problems
Bad File Association
Includes You can test to see if the problem is not having an association with Media Player by doing the following:
  1. Double-click on My Computer from the desktop.
  2. Right-click over the CD-Rom drive which has the CD in it and choose Find or Search.
  3. In the Named or Search for files or folders named box type *.wav;*.mpg;*.avi.
  4. Make sure Include Subfolders or Search Options|Advanced|Search Subfolders is checked.
  5. When the list of files appears double-click on one file of each type and make sure it appears in Media Player.
You can correct the association by doing the following:
  1. First, click the start button.
  2. Next, choose programs.
  3. Then, choose accessories.
  4. Under accessories you will find either entertainment or multimedia. Under one of these you will find Windows Media Player listed.
  5. Start Windows Media Player.
  6. If you have a tools menu in Windows Media Player choose options from that menu. If you don't have tools then options will be listed under view.
  7. Click on the Formats or File Types tab of the options dialog.
  8. Click the Select All button on the Formats or File Types tab.
  9. Click apply.
  10. Click Ok.
  11. Close Media Player.
Sound and/or video compression is not installed
Includes:
Cannot play back the video stream: no suitable decompressor was found
Video portion plays but sound doesn't
Sound plays but video doesn't
To fix this sound and video compression needs to be installed. To add all the default codecs in Windows, follow these steps:
  1. First, click the start button.
  2. Next, choose settings.
  3. Next, choose Control Panel
  4. In Control Panel , double-click Add/Remove Programs .
  5. On the Windows Setup tab, click Multimedia or Sounds and Multimedia, and then click Details .
  6. Click the Audio Compression and Video Compression check boxes to select them, and then click OK .
  7. Click OK .
