Once Upon A Time Music composed by Kevan R.Craft (c) 1993 Stored on this Disk as both Music-X and MIDI File format 1 Composed & Arranged for Music-X and MIDI by Kevan R.Craft 1993 For AM/FM - Amiga Musicians Freeware Magazine When I was at Manchester University, in the U.K. studing Media Studies, I specialised in Film Studies. Part of my Degree was to study Film Theory, as well as the Sociology of film. But I became increasingly aware of how the basic 'story' concept is very much the same in all cultures. Carl Jung, the Swiss psychologist, argued very much the same when he found re-occuring themes and motifs in story-telling between cultures. This is particularly true of 'Fairy Tales' where Europe has a rich body of work, but more importantly, all children grow up to the words 'Once Upon A Time' at the begining of a story. Jung called this the 'Collective Unconsciousness'. In the case of telling a story with a camera, where in film, the pictures relate the unfolding narrative based upon a screenplay, which has been written and based upon the artform of the novel. When I eventually began studing for a Masters Degree in Video Production at Bournemouth Polytechnic (now University), I read as much literature as I could on 'Fairy Tales', and discovered that quite a large proportion of Film-makers have be influenced by 'Fairy Tales' - Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger's 'The Red Shoes', 'The Tales of Hoffman', 'Peeping Tom', David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet'; Francis Coppola's 'Finnegan's Rainbow' and the recent 'Dracula'; Roman Polanski's 'Dance of the Vampires'; George Lucas' 'Star Wars' Trilogy; there are many other examples if you look for them. The intention behind this compostion 'Once Upon A Time' also derived from the titles used by the Itialian Film Director Sergio Leone, who was responsible for 'Once Upon a Time in the West' and 'Once Upon A Time in America' a Western and a Gangster movie made by an Italian who possessed a rare quality and perception in film-making. Sergio Leone also collaborated with the prolific composer Ennio Morricone. The soundtrack score for 'Once Upon A Time in America' is truely a masterpeice and should have been awarded an Oscar as best Film Score of that year but instead, like the film itself, it was not the recipient of any Oscars. We British awarded 'Once Upon A Time in America' 5 BAFTA's including one for its Film Score. When I studied my degree the connection was made between 'Fairy Tales', Story-Telling' and 'Film-Making'. Sergio Leone's 'Once Upon A Time in America', what a great combo! My 'Once Upon A Time' is simply a recognition of the art of story-telling in any form and an attempt to present a theme just like Ennio Morricone does when he composes for film...
