Reach Out and Fax Someone ═══ FaxWorks For OS/2 Reach Out and Fax Someone By Rod McKenzie Contributing Editor, Madison PC User's Group Copyright 1993 by Madison PC User's Group, P.O. This file was originally printed in the November 1993 Bits & PC's, a publication of the Madison PC User's Group, and may be reprinted only by not-for-profit organizations. Please give proper credit to the author and Bits & PC's. Are you ready to make the move from Windows to OS/2? I just made it, at least on one machine. Suddenly it seemed a little bare with only a few of the familiar supporting programs that I had found useful in Windows. One of the first utilities I wanted was fax software. I wanted to use my fax/modem to send documents directly from my machine and deliver them instantly to the receiver. Faxworks for OS/2 does the job very well and will also operate in the background, ready to receive faxes while the PC is on and busy doing other things. Faxworks was one of several possibilities I considered, and I decided to try it first. It promised support for the Intel SatisFAXtion 400, a CAS device, as well as Class 1, Class 2, and SendFax fax/modems. It includes OCR features to convert faxes into text. All the fax software I've ever installed has been more of challenge than I thought it ought to be. It's a great idea that it "ought to be easy to print from an application to the fax/modem." The fault isn't with the software. Most of the problems are with the hardware and the changes needed in the CONFIG.SYS file so the software and hardware can get along together. FaxWorks itself installs easily. The user simply places the installation diskette into the A&colon. drive and double clicks on the A&colon. drive icon on the PM desktop. A full-screen window pops up with icons or folders for each of the files on the diskette. One of these icons or objects is INSTALL.EXE. Double-click on that and the process starts. Easy, dare I say, almost like a Mac. During installation the user is asked to select the type of fax/modem that's attached to the system, and the COMPORT where it's located. Certain additional features are available if the software is to be loaded on a LAN. It may be necessary to exit OS/2 and reboot for the changes made by Faxworks to take effect. If you want to send a fax, the printer to select is Faxworks. This is how Faxworks does its job. It watches for any printing job sent to LPT3 and then jumps into action. It converts the output to a fax file, adds a cover sheet if required, and offers phonebooks or manual entry of name and fax number. The user can also schedule the time of transmission or send immediately. When it's time to send the fax, it connects with the fax/modem and dials the receiver's machine. ═══ 1.6.1.2. Initial Difficulties ═══ FaxWorks For OS/2 Initial Difficulties By Rod McKenzie Contributing Editor, Madison PC User's Group My first attempts to install Faxworks were done with an Intel SatisFAXtion 400 internal modem that Faxworks claims is supported. Unfortunately, the modem and the software would not respond to each other. After trying the modem with standard communications software, it became clear that OS/2 wasn't seeing the modem either. Rather than try to solve that problem immediately, I switched modems and used a Zoom 9600 fax/modem, a Class 2, with a traditional UART on the board. Well, that didn't work either. The communications soft- ware was not seeing a COM1 device at all. Time to get serious. Reading the OS/2 manual, I learned that COM.SYS, the driver for the COMPORTS, sometimes needs a hint as to what it's supposed to recognize as an active COMPORT. This is normally needed only for systems that intend to use COM3 or COM4. The user should find the DEVICE=COM.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS file and add these parameters at the end of the line (COMPORT, BASE ADDRESS, and INTERRUPT). So, for my Zoom Class 2 fax/modem on COM1, with the normal base address of 03F8 and IRQ4, my COM.SYS line now reads&colon. DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM.SYS (1,03F8,4) After editing this line, I shut down and rebooted the machine. Finally success! The fax/modem worked in both Faxworks and in the OS/2 communications applet, SofTerm. Unfortunately, tracking down such a problem is not something that I would expect the novice user of OS/2, nor any other operating system, to need to do. ═══ 1.6.1.3. Using FaxWorks ═══ FaxWorks For OS/2 Using FaxWorks By Rod McKenzie Contributing Editor, Madison PC User's Group After that brief detour in CONFIG.SYS, I started to learn about Faxworks' many useful features. I had loaded the OCR version of the program, so besides the normal send and receive features, there are also added export and clipboard features that allow Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of the fax image. This converts it into ASCII characters so it can be edited or exported into other documents as text. Starting at the left side of the menu bar, instead of File, the first entry is called, rightly enough, Fax. This is where fax files are opened, closed, deleted, imported, exported, sent, received, and printed to a local printer. One of the export choices is the OCR portion of the program. Faxworks allows you to cut and paste parts of other faxes into a new fax as graphic images. It allows entry of text as well, and also will import graphics from non-fax sources of image files. There's scanner support, too, so the graphics original doesn't even have to be in the computer when you start the editing process. The user also can use drawing tools to include sketches, highlight important information, show proofreading marks, and make marginal notes. ═══ 1.6.1.4. Two Jobs, One Modem ═══ FaxWorks For OS/2 Two Jobs, One Modem By Rod McKenzie Contributing Editor, Madison PC User's Group The background receive feature of Faxworks opens the COMPORT when it is active, taking the fax/modem and holding it as a resource. Under OS/2, this means that other programs cannot access the device. Even though it's not actually receiving a fax, it's looking at the phone line, ready to receive a call under Faxworks' direction. Fine, but what if you want to use the modem temporarily to call a BBS or some other on-line service? You could bring up Faxworks and manually shut off the receive mode, exit Faxworks, run the terminal program, then go back to Faxworks and restart the receive mode. A lot of mousing and clicking around. There's an easier way. Faxworks has a program called FXRCV.EXE that can be used to turn on or off the receive function from an OS/2 command line. This means that the user could create a small command file (similar to a DOS batch file) that would shut off the receive feature and then launch the communications program. The modem would then respond to the communications program, dialing and connecting as expected. Then when closing the application, control would return to the command file, which could be used to restart the receive function of Faxworks. For example this file might be used: CALL_BBS.CMD REM Turn off Receive mode of FaxWorks \FaxWorks\FxRcv -off cd\te2 REM Start TE2 Communications Program te2 REM After Exit, restart FaxWorks \FaxWorks\FxRcv -on ═══ 1.6.1.5. Simple Phonebook ═══ FaxWorks For OS/2 Simple Phonebook By Rod McKenzie Contributing Editor, Madison PC User's Group The Faxworks Phonebook file uses an extension of PBK, but is actually a simple text file that can be edited with any ASCII editor in either DOS or OS/2. The comma delimited format, where each entry field is separated by a comma, is easy to read and edit. The user can enter names and numbers in a dialog box within the regular Faxworks application, or convert lists that have been created in a word processor's mail merge file or a in spreadsheet program that is exported as comma delimited text. ═══ 1.6.1.6. Faxing From the Command Line ═══ FaxWorks For OS/2 Faxing From The Command Line By Rod McKenzie Contributing Editor, Madison PC User's Group Those who want to fax text files may do so without even opening a word processor application. If the file is an ASCII text file, the user can send it to LPT3 with the COPY command and let Faxworks jump into action: COPY FILENAME.TXT ;LPT3 Faxworks should be open but minimized on the desktop for the response to be immediate, otherwise the user has to open Faxworks and go to the scheduler, which will show the job as waiting to be sent. Beyond this minimalist fax approach, the user can control Faxworks with commands entered in a word processor's macro language. This would make it feasible to automate both generating documents and sending them to one or more fax numbers. ═══ 1.6.1.7. Documentation ═══ FaxWorks For OS/2 Documentation By Rod McKenzie Contributing Editor, Madison PC User's Group The Faxworks for OS/2 manual is a good reference for the user who wants the basic functions clearly explained. It contains almost a dozen appendices dealing with special topics for the user or developer who plans to exploit any of Faxworks more sophisticated features. Some specific hardware issues, such as Intel's SatisFAXtion or the Brooktrout modems, have an appendix of their own. The Help screen is a good resource for the user once the program is installed, but that's usually after most of the problems have been solved. SofNet operates a BBS as a part of their technical support for users, as well as providing telephone and fax support. Faxworks should be near the top of the "must buy" list for anyone using OS/2 and wanting to use a fax/modem. LAN versions are also available, as are a DOS and a Windows version. Faxworks is presently priced at $99 on a special offer from: ═══ 1.6.1.8. Views & Opinions ═══ A Wake-Up Call to IBM - Part II Waiting & Watching For PowerPC ═══ 1.7.1. A Wake-Up Call To IBM - Part II ═══ Attention To Details Consistency Pays Correct Pricing and Packaging Missed Marketing Opportunities Don't Throw Away Free Publicity It's Time To Make Some Changes ═══ 1.7.1.1. Attention To Details ═══ A Wake-Up Call To IBM - Part II Attention To Details By Albert Shan & Craig Swanson (From The San Diego OS/2 User Group) Authors' Note: This article grew out of a long running discussion thread on the Fidonet OS2 conference in February and March 1994. We covered a lot of ground, and at times the discussion became very technical. As a result, we put together this article to summarize the key points of our discussion along with a few examples in the hopes that this text might encourage IBM to start paying attention to our concerns about the immediate future for OS/2. p. (Continued from Last Month) This month we'll start with a few suggestions to IBM. 1. Rename the file to CONFIG.OS2, but keep it a text file. CONFIG.SYS should be left for DOS applications to modify and could still be used for OS/2's DOS support. 2. When OS/2 generates the file, arrange the statements in some order that is not total chaos. For example, during installation the CONFIG.OS2 file should be generated such that the physical device drivers are grouped together in a section, the statements such as THREADS and MAXWAIT that affect multitasking are in another section, and all the other statements are grouped by related lines. Also add comments to indicate what each statement or group of statements does. 3. Add some new features to better manage system configuration. First of all, allow environment variable substitution to be used in CONFIG.OS2 so that OS/2 applications can add to the PATH without having to append to a single PATH line. The current situation is that many OS/2 applications add to that single PATH line, resulting in a line that can easily grow to several hundred characters in length and become a problem to edit with most text editors, assuming that one could even find what should be edited in such a long line. Next, change LIBPATH so it becomes an environment variable and can also use substitution as mentioned above. Finally, consider adding an INCLUDE directive which applications could use to add information in additional files to CONFIG.OS2 processing after the basic OS/2 system has been started. INCLUDE files should be used by OS/2 applications and the base CONFIG.OS2 file shouldn't be touched except to append an INCLUDE directive. 4. Add a graphical CONFIG.OS2 editor to assist users who are not experts at modifying the file while reducing the risk of producing a corrupted file. Here's a highly abbreviated example of what the result would be for a system with CONFIG.OS2 and LOTUS123.CFG files: REM ***** Contents of CONFIG.OS2 file ***** REM ***** Physical Device Drivers ***** BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD BASEDEV=IBM1FLPY.ADD REM ***** File Systems ***** IFS=C:\OS2\HPFS.IFS /CACHE:2048 /CRECL:32 /AUTOCHECK:CDE REM ***** Environment Variables ***** SET LIBPATH=.;C:\OS2\DLL; SET PATH=C:\OS2;C:\OS2\SYSTEM; REM ***** Applications ***** INCLUDE C:\Lotus\Lotus123.CFG REM ***** Contents of Lotus123.CFG file ***** SET LIBPATH=%LIBPATH%;C:\Lotus\DLL; SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\Lotus; Finally, one last suggestion would be to allow changing the global environment variables while the system is still running and not to require rebooting the computer after changing them in the CONFIG.OS2 and/or INCLUDE files. A new command and programming call could be added to allow installation programs to modify the default environment used by all programs. Thus it would be possible to use a program without having to reboot after installation. For instance, this would allow installation of all the components of IBM's C Set++ 2.1 software development tools package without having to reboot the computer several times as is now necessary. ═══ 1.7.1.2. Consistency Pays ═══ A Wake-Up Call To IBM - Part II By Albert Shan & Craig Swanson (From The San Diego OS/2 User Group) Consistency Pays Users appreciate consistent software. For example, having F1 as the help key in most applications has been a de facto standard for years. Nearly the only exception was WordPerfect, a point noted by many who consequently laughed at how completely unintuitive its user interface was. For IBM and OS/2, consistency means that IBM should make a dedicated effort to ensure that its OS/2 applications and tools should at least be PM or WPS programs unless it absolutely makes no sense. Moreover, whatever the type of program, IBM's OS/2 applications should show off the features of OS/2, not avoid using them. But today we have the LAN administration tools in LAN Server 3.0, many of which remain text mode programs that refuse to even run in a window. And we have utilities included with OS/2 2.1 such as the System Editor (E.EXE) which shouldn't even be called OS/2 programs due to their complete lack of use of basic OS/2 features such as multithreading. For proof, load a 1MB text file into the System Editor, highlight half the text file, and then delete the selected text. Now watch as the ever appealing (ugh!) hourglass is displayed on the screen for half a minute as the System Editor does its work. Press CTRL-ESC and you get nothing except maybe a notice about how the E.EXE program isn't responding. If IBM allows its own programmers to so blatantly and ignorantly avoid the use of multithreading for operations that make the user wait for long periods of time, how can IBM or we as OS/2 users expect third party software vendors to write applications that make proper use of OS/2's features? The capabilities of preemptive multitasking, multithreading, a 32-bit memory model, and an advanced object-oriented user interface are all little more than useless if nobody writes OS/2 applications to take advantage of them. IBM should be the first to realize this. Additional points could be earned by having a common installation command. For instance, all IBM software products should use the command "INSTALL" rather than the variety of commands used today -- "MINSTALL" for one product, "LANINST" for another product, and a unique command for virtually every other product. It would help the user learn and feel comfortable with IBM OS/2 software if the software was consistent from the very start of installation. There is no confusion as to which INSTALL program OS/2 is going to pick, as one would simply change directory to the product in question before typing INSTALL. Observant users have noticed that Microsoft uses SETUP for all their products and provides a consistent look and feel. Observant programmers are what IBM seems to be lacking. Just take a look the attention to relatively small details such as common installation programs that Lotus and Microsoft give to their Windows products. If IBM wants to defeat the competition, they need to study the competitors strengths and weaknesses in painstaking detail. Attention to details goes a long way in gaining acceptance from users and adds to the perception of a program being a quality software product. ═══ 1.7.1.3. Correct Pricing and Packaging ═══ A Wake-Up Call To IBM - Part II By Albert Shan & Craig Swanson (From The San Diego OS/2 User Group) Correct Pricing and Packaging IBM is still in learning mode and playing catch up in the personal computer industry. They've been playing hit-or-miss decision making, hoping they will get it right eventually. And even though their decisions do appear to be getting wiser at times, there may not be enough time for them to regain users' confidence and acceptance in the near future. Consider some of the pricing strategies in the past year. IBM released the C Set++ 2.0 software development package around May 1993. Then about six months later, they announced C Set++ 2.1. Users generally like software upgrades, but the people who upgraded to 2.0 just a few months earlier were incensed that the price to upgrade from C Set++ 2.0 to C Set++ 2.1 was the same as the upgrade price for C Set/2 1.0 to C Set++ 2.1. Although IBM eventually lowered the upgrade charge for users who already upgraded to C Set++ 2.0, the company lost a lot of good will as its original pricing showed that IBM doesn't value customer loyalty as much as it should. The OS/2 2.1 Service Pack caused similar customer complains. Why should OS/2 2.1 users have to pay as much for the Service Pack as an OS/2 for Windows user paid to buy an entire copy of OS/2? IBM eventually lowered the price of the CD-ROM version from $40 to $25, but again it cost the good will of many customers. OS/2 users don't necessarily demand rock-bottom prices all of the time, but there should at least be some preferential bonus given as a reward for customer loyalty to people who have been using and upgrading OS/2 or IBM OS/2 applications. Slightly cheaper upgrade prices are one way to do that, but other ways such as bonus software could be used, instead. IBM also has problems with packaging. The skimpy documentation in OS/2 2.0 drew many complaints. Although IBM corrected that problem in OS/2 2.1, the same problem happened again with C Set++ 2.0 as IBM included almost no printed documentation with the version on CD-ROM. Has IBM learned the lesson yet? Or will they blow it with another product release? A more important question is how many times can users tolerate IBM's mistakes before they loose patience and think of switching to other platforms? User of other operating systems wonder if IBM is a competent company that can set new standards, do things right the first time, and do it right consistently after hearing these stories. The sad truth is, IBM is so fragmented these days, many divisions often have no idea what the others are doing. IBM needs to get their divisions together to set a standard for all their PC software products. IBM needs correct pricing and packaging the first time a product is announced, and it needs to do this right time after time. And if one division does manage to make a mistake, the other divisions should learn a lesson rather than repeat the same error a few months later with a different product. ═══ 1.7.1.4. Missed Marketing Opportunities ═══ A Wake-Up Call To IBM - Part II By Albert Shan & Craig Swanson (From The San Diego OS/2 User Group) Missed Marketing Opportunities IBM's marketing effort has improved a thousand times over since the release of OS/2 2.0. But there remain a number of glaring lapses in the marketing effort for OS/2. The company until recently has never been aggressive in marketing their products to end-users. But it has done well with the Ambra and PS/ValuePoint lines of PC's. However, they have failed miserably in software products such as PC-DOS and OS/2. As for OS/2, IBM needs to further increase the installed user base by mentioning OS/2 as a preinstalled option in their Ambra and PS/VP ads. IBM has a number of deals with OEM's such as AST and Dell for preloading OS/2, but these OEM's don't advertise OS/2 preloading as an option in their magazine ads. IBM has a hardware certification program for OS/2, but it misses the mark. Part of the point of such a program should be to get OEM hardware vendors to endorse it and to market their hardware with the OS/2 certification logo just like they use the Microsoft Windows logo and the Intel Inside logo today. Although this sounds like a conflict of interest with the IBM PC Company and its sole interest of selling PC hardware, IBM Personal Software Products should remain independent and be able to do whatever necessary to help sell their software products. ═══ 1.7.1.5. Don't Throw Away Free Publicity ═══ A Wake-Up Call To IBM - Part II By Albert Shan & Craig Swanson (From The San Diego OS/2 User Group) Don't Throw Away Free Publicity Articles on new technologies and features are commonplace in the computer industry press. What is less common is IBM managing to point out in these articles how OS/2 already features these new technologies. For example, InfoWorld and PC Week have both published articles on the lack of Pentium optimizations in today's software, object-oriented programming systems, and system-wide scripting languages. These articles mentioned Microsoft, Lotus, and Borland projects that aren't even finished. But they didn't mention IBM OS/2. OS/2 2.1 already employs some Pentium optimizations for use in DOS support, it offers System Object Model for language-neutral object-oriented programming, and it features REXX as a system-wide scripting language used by an increasing number of applications. If IBM can't even manage to get the magazines to mention how OS/2 already has these features months or years ahead of many competitors, how are the masses of computer users going to learn about how OS/2 delivers other vendors' promises today? ═══ 1.7.1.6. It's Time To Make Some Changes ═══ A Wake-Up Call To IBM - Part II By Albert Shan & Craig Swanson (From The San Diego OS/2 User Group) It's Time To Make Some Changes It should by now be clear that IBM has a big job cut out for it if the company truly wants to preserve OS/2's technical excellence and keep the operating system in the number one selling position of 32-bit PC operating systems. First, IBM has to continue to improve OS/2 at the most basic level so the operating system will continue to appeal to existing users. Second, the company needs to pay attention to details that will make OS/2 more hospitable to both new and experienced users. Third, consistency counts. If IBM is going to sell OS/2 as a 32-bit multithreaded operating system with an object-oriented user interface, then IBM's OS/2 applications should also fulfill those claims. After all, what is an operating system without applications? Finally, the marketing group needs to quit making mistakes with packaging and pricing that turn users off. And it must also start taking advantage of inexpensive opportunities to put the OS/2 name in front of people's eyes. OS/2 is by no means a household name yet, but if the OS/2 logo shows up in many computer hardware advertisements and OS/2's leading edge features are mentioned in computer publications as they should be, the public's perception of OS/2 will change from one of uncertainty and unfamiliarity to one of confidence and understanding. Only then can OS/2 have a fighting chance to remain the top dog in 32-bit desktop PC operating systems. ═══ 1.7.2. Waiting & Watching For Power PC ═══ Waiting & Watching For Power PC A Hardware Hacker's Lament! By John D. Johnson The San Diego OS/2 User Group In March, Apple Computer Co. unveiled its version of the Power PC, called the Power Mac, and they are now on the shelves of computer stores. Betcha the guys and ladies buying them feel the same way I did when I opened up the box of my first Lionel train set when I was 9-years-old. However, I am bridling that new computer "rush" some of us get when we are tantalized by a new machine as glorified in the advertisements. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop: The IBM Power PC, to see how it shapes up. Byte Magazine had a replete group of articles, in the April, '94 edition, concerning the Power Mac and the upcoming IBM Power PC. Those articles provide a good preview of the Power PC in terms of its architecture and software-ability. According to the article, the IBM Power PC's architecture includes a sort of stair step, three level bus system. It has a 16-bit ISA bus, a 32-bit PCI bus and the 64-bit processor bus (not accessible except via the motherboard.) The bus configuration is what I am most concerned about because I would like to be able to salvage as much of my present hardware as possible. Theoretically, this appears to be possible. But as a practical matter, based on the schematic and motherboard shown in the Byte article, it does not appear we will be able to salvage much more than our monitors or SCSI type devices. There does not appear to be a direct hookup for ISA or EISA devices. To be sure, there's a PCI bus and no doubt, you will be able to plug in future PCI peripherals. What about existing PCI cards? Dunno. Probably. We'll just have to wait and see. Interestingly, it looks like the IBM Power PC may utilize a PCMCIA "port" for plugging in peripherals. Now, kind reader, I know you may be tired of reading those acronyms (ISA, etc.) and wondering what they mean. If they are Greek to you, I have put a table of definitions which roughly explains what they are at the end of this article. I would advise anyone who is seriously following the microcomputer industry right now, to become well-versed in these terms and their ramifications. Also keep in mind when appraising Intel's and IBM's and Apple's claims, that the PowerPC, represents an evolutionary advance, and not just a work-around for an old chip. As to the touted capability of running past software (DOS, Windows or OS2) and future (PowerPC-ware) software, that will be a reality. But the "improvement" you might expect in the operation of the older software may prove illusory. In the Power Mac, this same feature is included, that is, the ability to run PC (Dos, et al) software. But it takes a co-processor and special software (like almost $200 worth) to run the DOS-ware. Even though the processor is running at more mega-herz (66 mhz -- think m.p.h.), the software does not realize a like gain in performance because it has to go through the translation process. Roughly like the difference between regular Assembly Language programs as compared to those run under basic, which first has to interpret them. To see the real performance gains, you'll have to wait for the full 64-bit software. For all that power, however, we are going to pay a heavy price in additional memory costs for that 64-bit software. For what we gain in finer line drawings, greater detail in games and silkier fonts, will take much more storage and RAM memory. Clearly, the micro-poker ante is going up. I also wonder if the greater detail will again slow down the machine, a-la Describe's "slow" operation in OS/2. Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to put up with all that for the hoped for progress to take place. All that gets me back to my main concern: are hardware hackers, such as myself, going to have to give up buying our computers in pieces as we were in the habit of doing in the past? At first, if you want a first edition model of the IBM Power PC, you'll obviously have to go for the "bundled" machine. But IBM has been making sounds like it will make this an open architecture machine to enjoy the fruits of greater third party acceptance, so maybe we will see some KloneBM Power PC's? Now then, what kind of price tag is the true blue Power PC going to have? Upon comparing the MacPC's motherboard with the IBM PPC (had to pop that new acronym on you, didn't I), I would guess it is going to cost more than the MPC. There just seems to be more to it: Byte shows it as having all the existing buses as well as the new 64-bit bus (for the processor and not for "throughput."). I have to admit that I am assuming IBM does not intend to include an ISA connector as I could not see the familiar AT double plug connector on the board shown in the article. Why have the ISA bus if it isn't gonna connect up with an ISA peripheral? Actually, it does and it doesn't:It is used to connect the 3.5 floppy and it is also there for software designed for the present software or signal processing. The article stated that no provision will be made for either an EISA or MCA bus. The usual serial and parallel ports are included as are both an internal and an external SCSI. (Drat, why didn't I get a SCSI controlled hard drive when I upgraded instead of the IDE?) There are what appear to be three rectangular areas in the center of the board which look like they may be connector pads, without the connectors. Perhaps IBM is keeping its options open in regard to the bus question? Well, now, I may not have converted any of you to hardware hacking, but I probably have converted myself to saving my dollars to buy a bundled PC. But before I bite, I want to see it in operation -- not just at the computer shop -- first. Also, I commend the Byte articles in the April edition to you as my article here by no means even scratches the surface of the subject of the Power PC. It promises to be an incredible machine. ═══ 1.8. IBM's award-winning OS/2* has become the industry's 32-bit PC operating system standard as evidenced by the shipment of the software's five millionth copy. Since the release of OS/2 2.0 in March 1992, OS/2 has ranked consistently near the top of software best-seller lists and nabbed almost every major software award -- 37 prestigious honors in all -- from Technical Excellence to Readers' Choice to Overall Product of the Year. The editors of PC Magazine, an influential publication known for its comprehensive product testing, bestowed the honor of "Editors' Choice" on OS/2 2.1 in their May 31 issue. After extensive evaluations of 32-bit operating systems, PC Magazine recommended OS/2 over Windows** NT and other competitive products. In fact, OS/2 has shipped nearly 20 times the number of NT copies shipped to date. In awarding the "Editors' Choice" designation, the publication said, "OS/2 impressed us with its stability, its true object-oriented GUI interface and strong DOS and Microsoft Windows emulation." The publication rated OS/2 "Excellent" in the following categories: Application Development, DOS and Windows Emulation and Networking and Connectivity. "OS/2 continues to prove the skeptics wrong as it converts more and more users," noted industry consultant Sam Albert, president of Sam Albert Associates, Scarsdale, N.Y. "OS/2 is delivering today what Windows NT hasn't and Chicago hopes to deliver -- a reliable, industrial-strength 32-bit operating system." The readers of InfoWorld, a PC publication targeted at people involved in all areas of computing, recently gave OS/2 top honors in two categories for the second consecutive year: "Overall Product of the Year" and "Software Product of the Year." In addition to sweeping these readers' choice awards for the second year, the editors of InfoWorld recognized OS/2 this year with yet another "Product of the Year" distinction for interoperability. "OS/2 2.1 was the only operating system where we could get NetWare, LAN Server and TCP/IP running simultaneously and still be able to run all our OS/2, DOS and Windows applications with RAM to spare," beamed Nicholas Petreley of the InfoWorld Enterprise Team. "Combine that with the multitasking and powerful OS/2 Workplace Shell, and we can't imagine ever going back to a DOS/Windows environment." Another Product of the Year Award Earlier this year, readers of DATAMATION also selected OS/2 as their "Product of the Year" for a second straight year. OS/2 won the readers' choice award in the very competitive PC Software category. "The fact that both readers and editors of top computer publications are recognizing OS/2 -- in some cases for two consecutive years -- is a strong testament to the growing momentum and industry-wide enthusiasm for OS/2," said Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "Users and editors alike are demanding a powerful operating system, and as the growing number of awards illustrates, they are repeatedly choosing OS/2. Combine this with the fact that we've shipped more than five million copies of OS/2, and there's no doubt that OS/2 is clearly the leading 32-bit PC operating system on the market." In addition to receiving top honors in the United States, OS/2 has been recognized around the world by numerous publications and industry organizations, ranging from a "Best Chinese Information Product of 1993" award from Taiwan's Chinese Micro-Computer Extended Foundation to a "1993 Must-Have Award" from Soft et Micro in France. Most recently, OS/2 earned a Technical Excellence Award from France's PC Expert and was named "Operating System of the Year" by Germany's CHIP Magazine. "It's 12 months to 'Chicago', we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses. Hit it!" ═══ 1.8.2. BBS Introduction ═══ This listing is for the BBS junkie in you who needs to have a phone bill treat once in a while . Or bored to death while you're travelling. Our listing is based on a rather extensive listing put together by Dave Fisher of OS/2 type Bulletin Boards. Space limits this month prevent us from listing all the details he has for each BBS, but we've tried to include a couple from every state in the US (Notice and hint to you sysops...not all states are represented.) and a few foreign countries, too. Dave Fisher's list is a compilation of OS/2 BBS's across the world. If you wish to make an addition or correction to his list, he's asked that you please netmail your BBS information to Dave Fisher at LiveNet, 1:170/110@fidonet.org. We changed the look this month - got some feedback from our beta viewers and decided to lay out the BBS's in a perhaps more readable manner. Is it better? That's up to you. The main point is that I've got it set up in RBase 4.5 Plus for OS/2 and should be able to generate the code I need rather easily. For the newsletter, I've sorted the list in alphabetical order by Country for the international ones and by state for those in the USA to make it easier to find one close to you. Dave's file has other details related to these BBS's but we didn't have room, okay? The file we're using showed that the last update was September 7, 1992. Does anyone know if this list of his is being kept up to date? We've also added to the list as we came across new OS/2 BBS's seen on Fidonet and elsewhere or the sysop(s) telling us about their BBS. Hope you find this inclusion useful. Large phone bills are not my fault...!!! ═══ 1.14.2.
