Internet Relay Chat (IRC):
I won't be very detailed about IRC, but I will tell you enough to get started. IRC is a form of cyber chat. It's basicly a bunch of computers linked together and allows you to connect with your IRC-client. The computer you log in to, will give you the ability to talk with the other users in that network. In other words, you can connect to a server in Norway and chat with users connected to a US server. (Provided that they are connected to the same IRC network)...

There are a lot of different IRC Networks, UnderNet, GalaxyNet and DalNet, just to mention few. To make it a bit clearer I will repeat my self: Connecting to e.g. a GalaxyNet server you can communicate with all the users connected to another Galaxynet server, where ever it would be.

You chat in text, not in speech, but in a year or two, who knows... IRC is splitted up in "channels", just imagine 10.000 people chating at once if there were no channels to join. E.g. join the channel #Teenchat, by entering"/join #Teenchat" on your client. If the channel exists you will see some people in there. Someone in the channel will have OP (Operator) status, he/she can kick or ban people from a channel. He/She can also give or remove OP from others. If you enter a channel, and no one else is there, you will be given the OP status automaticly by the server.

Another thing worth mentioning is that before you start, you need to choose a nickname (also called handle). It should be personal. (Most servers accepts max 8 characters)

My name is Jens Kristian Skogheim, and I live in a small town called H�nefoss, not far away from Oslo. By now you should know I live in Norway. If you want to catch me on IRC, my handle is Nixon^98 or Nixon^99 (I haven't decided yet). I usualy hang out on Galaxynet and Dalnet, although you might be able to catch me on Undernet sometimes.
