GAME CONTROLS --------------------------------------------------------------- Press H within the game to see a list of game controls. Left mouse click controls your character's navigation and interaction with objects and people. Right mouse click fires a weapon. Keyboard shortcuts include: H - Help/Documentation C - Turn on/Turn off close captioning O - Options P - Pause interactive segment I - Inventory III. GENERAL GAME ISSUES --------------------------------------------------------------- Your primary source of documentation for the demo is the Help system, accessible via the H key from within the demo. Press H any time you are confused about how the demo works. Press the Story button on the Main Menu to learn about the new assignment President Grant has given Jim West and Artemus Gordon. This demo is a small section of gameplay taken from West’s first mission in the game. West will automatically write in his journal as he makes important discoveries. Open the Inventory Saddlebag and then open the Journal to get a couple of clues during the demo. The level of difficulty chosen for Adventure (in the Options Screen) will determine how helpful the clues are in the final game, but since the demo just shows the action side of things, the Adventure difficulty settings are not operational. The gameplay segment combines the use of strategy and action to outwit the bad guys who have ambushed West as he tries to leave Mr. Street’s tavern (formerly Surratt House). The level of difficulty chosen for Action (in the Options Screen) will determine how many bad guys ambush you, how accurately they can shoot, and how aggressively they pursue you. In the easiest Action mode, there is a way to use the environment against every villain; you should never need to face down a villain without being in a place of safety. Yes, you will die (!) if you move out of your place of safety and into someone's field of fire, but you can treat the action section as an extended puzzle in this mode. In easy adventure mode (not available in the demo), the Journal entries are more explicit. You can change difficulty settings at any time if you need additional hints, and the Journal will be updated automatically. The MOST difficult adventure mode is not a setting you can choose in the game. Instead, you simply avoid looking at the Journal at all... You may want to go to the Options screen (hit O within the game) and adjust your Graphics/Audio detail. The default is "better", the medium setting; if you have slower hardware, select "good", and if you have faster hardware, select "best". IV. VIDEO OPTIONS --------------------------------------------------------------- - Low Video Memory - This checkbox is obsolete; the final version of the demo runs in this mode regardless of your texture memory. - No Page Flipping - Creates the back buffer in system memory instead of video memory. This disables page flipping. - Double Buffer - Tells the system to draw the next frame in an off-screen buffer and then "flipping" to the off-screen buffer in a single operation. This eliminates some "tearing" artifacts that can occur when the next frame is rendered directly into the on-screen buffer. - Triple buffer - For machines with ample video memory (> 8M) this option may improve performance. Two off-screen buffers are used instead of one. V. TROUBLESHOOTNG --------------------------------------------------------------- If you have a 3D hardware accelerator, this demo will attempt to use it for character rendering. In some cases, your 3D accelerator may not provide all the features needed for quality rendering. If you experience problems with the rendering or its performance, the Video Options button on the Play dialog may allow you to view the demo as intended. A Software renderer is available, although this will be slower than using a hardware renderer. If the characters look gray, check the No Page Flipping option on the Video Options dialog. If this doesn't work, check the Force Software 3D Renderer option. If you are using a hardware renderer with more than 8MB of video memory, you may be able to improve performance by selecting the Triple Buffer option on the Video Options dialog. Some users may experience better performance or improved audio by disabling '3D sound hardware'. You can find this option under Video Options. VI. DIRECTX INFORMATION --------------------------------------------------------------- What is DirectX? Microsoft's DirectX is a set of software components and drivers designed to create faster hardware performance in Windows based applications. DirectX is comprised of five components: DirectDraw, DirectInput, DirectPlay, DirectSound and Direct3D. Along with these components, DirectX includes a set of compatible drivers for the computer's video and sound cards along with input devices such as mice, joysticks and game pads. When installing the West Demo, the installer checks to see whether DirectX is installed on your system. If the installer does not detect a standard, current set of DirectX drivers, the demo will let you know and exit. However, a handful of video and sound cards use DirectX drivers which do not conform to Microsoft standards. -If the West Demo fails to run due to DirectX problems, you may be able to correct the problem by following these steps: 1. Update your hardware drivers IMPORTANT: If you have never updated your drivers before, you may want to consult your system/hardware vendor and get their recommendation. If you choose to update the drivers yourself, follow the installation instructions provided with the driver very carefully. -Notes on obtaining drivers Hardware manufacturers post new drivers on their web sites regularly that have enhanced performance and stability. Please check with your hardware manufacturer for an update as some difficulties may be related to drivers. 2 Reinstall DirectX -To restore your display or audio drivers after installing DirectX: 1. Close all applications and save your data. 2. Bring up the control panel by Selecting the Start button. Select Settings then Control Panel. 3. Open Add/Remove Programs and select DirectX Drivers. Press the Add/Remove option. 4. Choose the "Restore Audio drivers" button if you want to restore your audio drivers or select the "Restore Display drivers" button if you want to restore your display drivers. You can only restore one driver at a time, not both. 5. Press "OK" to restart your computer. Note: If DirectX did not install new display or audio drivers (or if you have already restored them), then pressing the "Restore Audio drivers" or "Restore Display drivers" button will just result in a dialogue that says "DirectX setup was completed successfully."
