PNG ( Portable Network Graphic ) is an image format which came into being as a result of Unisys, the developers of the LZW compression technique for use by Compuserve in the GIF format, threatening to enforce their patent. This meant that commercial developers including GIF encoding or decoding algorithms had to pay a licence fee to Compuserve. Enraged, a number of people banded together to create a patent-free graphics format, PNG pronounced 'Ping'. PNG is superior to GIF in that it has better compression and supports millions of colours.
