Amiga Flame's World Of Amiga 98 Report

This year's World of Amiga show has been pretty eventful with Amiga Inc announcing the future direction of the Amiga but there was also plenty happening for Amiga Gamers.

The WOA show heralded the release of four games, many users have been eagerly waiting to get their hands on them for some time. Foundation, Virtual Karting 2, Quake and Genetic Species were all on show and available to buy from most stands.

On the Amiga International stand was hosted Vulcan Software showing off the impressive Genetic Species which startled and drew in the crowds. They decorated the Amiga and setting for the occasion in a military style to give it that action feeling and showed off the Intro sequence which reminded me more of the type of spaceship battles in B5. But when it comes down to the action, it was just as good with it running fast but it was using CyberVision and an 060 processor. The explosions were brilliant to watch and I would have to say better than in Quake - the action came in thick and fast, it's a game you got to get.

Alive MediaSoft were in attendance having brought over 700 titles to sell at the show including many of the latest releases. I have learned that they have delayed releasing their games for some months due to the increased competition of so many titles being released at the same time. This means The Haunted will be arriving sometime in the later half of the year but the really good News is that they have a 3D racing game in development, more News of this should be soon coming.

Epic Marketing had two stands one from which they were selling games and software and the other for displaying the full games, allowing people to try them out. Virtual Karting 2 and Sixth Sense Investigations were on display, and people seemed to enjoy having a go, to decide which to buy.

Although ClickBOOM were unable to attend, the highly awarded Myst was on the Amiga Format stand and the well renowned Quake on the CU Amiga stand. Quake was a little jerky but that didn't stop Amiga users who still had the blood lust of anyone who owns Quake. For whose who have not received their Pre-order copy, it should be on the way soon according to Weird Science. They also had other Quake add-ons for sale, like Malice, Shrak, Time of Reckoning, and Mission Packs 1&2. The many add-ons means that you are likely to see Quake in the Magazines for sometime to come.

Power Computing were to display a demo of GOLEM which has been covered on Amiga Flame in depth but I didn't see anything of a demo during my visit. However looking through their catalogue, I discovered that they mentioned GOLEM having a release date of June. The Summer releases of 98 are turning out to be real crackers but it's going to leave your wallet thin, so choose wisely or loose out.

Flyers were going around about a New Amiga Magazine which is on it's way from Crystal Software & Electronics called 'Amiga Survivor'. It looks set to have worldwide distribution with it being mail order for the meantime. They are also a Games Publisher, their first title being Damage described as bring one of the most violent games on the Amiga. I'll have more details on Amiga Survivor soon.

On the creative side of the Amiga Market was Wizard Developments who were proudly demonstrating ImageFX 3.0 and Aladdin 4D 5.0 along with Directory Opus 5.6 from GP Software. HiSoft Systems were persuading owners to connect to the Internet selling IBrowse and helpful books to attain this. Lets hope more users join the Amiga Community on the Internet.

The AAA award was won by Holger Kruse, the author of Miami - he seemed a little surprised by it all but it was an award that he deserved for his achievements that have helped the Amiga Community. The runners up were, Urban Muller of Aminet and Phase 5 for bringing PowerUp.

But this years show had something different but yet brilliant, it was the launch of the official Amiga Theme which was performed on stage by Annex and won great applause from all. It's a nice piece of music, I really didn't expect the Theme to be this good, I think you'll find those who seen the performance will say it's worth getting the CD. Luckily I managed to get my copy signed by Petro himself who was all over the place giving out mouse pads, Back For The Future posters, pens, stickers and even the odd free CD.

The World Of Amiga show for 1998 does seem to be a success especially for Amiga Gamers who will be be spoilt for choice in games. The crowds were big and from what I seen they were buying and buying which is sure to have put a smile on the face of those companies who attended.
