The HP e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent is a Windows-based utility that gathers the IP configuration of the PC and stores it in the HP Utility Partition on your hard disk. This allows e-Diagtools (which is running in DOS mode) to use these networking parameters, for instance in order to send the e-Diagtools Support Ticket file by e-mail or to download a new BIOS for the PC from the HP web site.
Specifically, the LAN Configuration Agent gathers the following IP parameters:
- Web proxy IP address and port number
- SMTP mail relay address and hostname
- Local IP address
- IP subnet mask
- DNS address
The primary use of the LAN Configuration Agent is to run once every time Windows starts. It will then gather the IP information and copy it to a configuration file stored in the Utility Partition. This will not consume a lot of system resources (see section Requirements below). Note that since some of the parameters listed above are user-dependent, the values associated with the last user who logged in will be used.
But in order to change the behavior of the Agent, e.g. to force it to run manually, or to keep the current LAN configuration, a Windows-based interface is provided. To access it, click Start > Programs > HP e-Diagtools > HP e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent.
We recommend running the e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent in order to take advantage of the e-support features of Diagtools (BIOS updates, sending Support Ticket through e-mail).
However, with e-Diagtools version 3.01 or higher, it is also possible to type in the values of the network parameters using the keyboard. You can also enter all the network parameters needed by e-Diagtools using HP TopTools Device Manager (version 5.0 or higher). If the IP parameters are incorrect within e-Diagtools, you will not be able to use the e-support features of e-Diagtools,
but you will still be able to use the DOS-level hardware diagnostics.
Also note that the e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent does not fill in all the parameters that may be needed or useful when using e-Diagtools. For instance, it does not copy any e-mail address. Thus, it will be up to you to provide this information within e-Diagtools before sending a Support Ticket through e-mail. Note, however, that you do not need to do this every time you run e-Diagtools since the information is stored in the HP Utility Partition.
Version A.01.25 introduces a new checkbox “Use advanced network configuration”. This parameter controls whether or not the user of e-Diagtools has access to the “Advanced” button in the network configuration screen, which allows him/her to change network parameters in e-Diagtools through the keyboard.
This e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent can only be used with the latest models of Hewlett-Packard personal computers supporting e-Diagtools 2.50 or higher. Please consult the support matrices on the HP support website at: http://www.hp.com/go/vectrasupport (or briosupport, kayaksupport or e-pcsupport as applicable) under the heading Diagtools.
Other pre-requisites:
- Operating systems:
- Microsoft® Windows® 95 OSR 2.0 or higher
- Windows 98 through Second Edition
- Windows NT 4.0 SP4 through 6
- Windows 2000 Gold.
- One of the following web browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x
- Internet Explorer 5.0
- Netscape Communicator 4.5 or higher.
- One of the following mail clients:
- Microsoft Outlook Express (Windows 98 version or Win 2000/IE5
version)
- Outlook 97
- Outlook 98
- Outlook 2000
- Mozilla (embedded in Netscape 4.x)
- Network Interface Card supported by HP, and network settings that are functioning correctly.
- A HP Utility Partition on the hard disk with e-Diagtools functioning correctly.
Resource consumption:
- Disk space: the setup program is about 1.5 Mb.
- Memory: about 150 kb plus the DLL to access the Utility Partition.
The visual interface application consumes an additional 150 kb.
This memory is released once the program exits, even under Windows NT or 2000 where the program is implemented as a service.
- Execution time: approximately one second.
HP e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent is supplied pre-loaded on most of the PC models that it supports. However, you still need to run an installation program once the networking has been configured.
If you download the software package from the web, to install the software just run the executable e-DiagtoolsLANConfigurationAgent.exe, which is a self-extractible file that also runs the Setup program automatically. No system restart is necessary after installation.
To verify correct installation, click Start > Programs > HP e-Diagtools > HP e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent.
To upgrade from a previous version, we recommend uninstalling the old version prior to installing the new one.
The following contents are supplied within this software package:
The main self-extractible file will install the HP e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent, which includes both services and processes and a user interface to change the behavior of
the utility.
This file in two versions (Whatsnew.doc and Readme.txt) is included as documentation.
Be aware of the following limitations of the HP e-Diagtools LAN Configuration Agent:
- The utility assumes that the current LAN configuration under Windows is correct and working. It cannot modify or fix an incorrect IP configuration.
- Automatic proxy configurations defined in the web browser are not supported. The LAN Configuration Agent is unable to retrieve the networking parameters in this case.
