Setting up your printer as a shared printer
Accessing the printer through a network

This section tells you how to set up your printer so that other computers on the network can use it. First, you need to set up the printer as a shared printer on the computer to which the printer is connected.

Then, you need to install the printer software on the other computers on the network and specify the network path from these computers to the printer.

Setting up your printer as a shared printer

Follow these steps to share a printer that is connected directly to your computer with others on a network.

1. Double-click the My Computer icon, then double-click the Printers folder and select your printer.

2. Click Sharing on the File menu.

3. Click Shared and enter the Share Name.

Do not choose any drivers from the Alternate Drivers list.

Accessing the printer through a network

To access your printer from another computer on a network, you need to install the printer software in the computer you want to print from, then set the network path to the printer. Follow these steps.

Your printer must be set up as a shared resource on the computer to which it is directly connected before you can access it from another computer. For instructions, see Setting up your printer as a shared printer.

1. Install the printer software in the computer you want to print from.

2. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Printers.

3. Double-click the Add Printer icon.

4. Click the Network printer radio button. Click Next.

5. Double-click the icon of the computer that is directly connected to the printer. Then click the printer's icon.

Be sure to confirm all network settings with the network administrator.

6. Click OK and follow the messages on the screen.
