Besides the math and displaymath environments discussed in section 2.1.4, other multi-line math environments (equation, array, eqnarray, and eqnarray*) are also available. Each is mutually exclusive (that is, one may not be nested inside the other) except for the array environment which must be nested inside some other math environment. (It took me a long time to come to grips with this apparent anomaly). There's also a general environment command, which is exactly the same command found on the Text Style submenu.
