It lets you do what you do best. Only now you can do it better with UltraComputing, a genuine step forward in network computing. UltraComputing systems from Sun combine supercharged UltraSPARC(TM) processors, integrated 2-D/3-D graphics acceleration and MPEG video decompression, a crossbar-switched architecture and high-bandwidth Fast Ethernet into a single, high-performance system, one that unleashes your power to create. UltraComputing Partner Applications This CD collection of applications provided by our software partners, along with the rest of the demos, tools and application software that make up the Ultra(TM) Pack, is designed to help you take advantage of UltraComputing. Try these applications and you will see how you can reach a new level of functionality and productivity on your new Sun Ultra system. The following descriptions of the partner applications on this CD have been provided by the respective companies. * Caldera Imaging Software - Cameleo is a unique professional software package for image acquisition, processing, retouching, RIP (PostScript and HPGL/2), color calibration/separation and output. It is the first 1 to 16 bits per color component software (RGB, CMYK, Grayscale) available on UNIX(R) workstations. It supports many graphics peripheral devices not previously available in UNIX environments and allows seamless sharing of those peripheral resources, both printers and scanners, in heterogeneous client-server environments. Graffiti is a 32-bit professional software package for image creation, manipulation, editing, and retouching/photocomposition. It supports 24-bit images with 256 transparency levels per pixel with no size limitations in eight different file formats. It works on three distinct and mixable layers, enabling image mixing and photomontage, in real time. Cameleo and Graffiti work together to provide a total imaging solution, ideally suited to the superior imaging performance of Sun's UltraComputing systems. * The Maestro Presentation Package - Maestro is a suite of more than ten applications that work together to form a flexible and simple authoring toolkit. It is extensible so that new applications and media, such as MPEG movies and animations, can be added quickly and easily to the authoring environment. It also takes full advantage of the 24-bit true-color graphics, CD-quality audio, and ONC RPC-based distributed computing that are standard features of UltraComputing systems from Sun. * Sun Microsystems Laboratories Tcl/Tk - Tcl is a simple scripting language that makes it easy to build programmable applications and connect them together. Tk is a graphical user interface toolkit based on Tcl: it allows you to create GUI applications by writing Tcl scripts instead of C code. Together, Tcl and Tk make it possible to build GUI applications five to twenty times more quickly than with traditional toolkits based on C or C+. Because Tcl is an interpreted language, it provides instantaneous turn-around during testing (no long waits for compilation), but also requires high-performance systems, especially for large applications. The fast processors and blazing graphics of Sun's new Ultra machines are ideally suited to executing Tcl/Tk scripts, even for complex tasks. * SoftQuad HoTMetaL - SoftQuad HoTMetaL 2.0 is the newest version of SoftQuad's freely available HTML authoring tool. Based on HoTMetaL PRO 2.0, SoftQuad's award-winning commercial version, the freeware version allows users to easily create documents for publication on the World Wide Web. HoTMetaL's features include point-and-click markup and multiple toolbars from which common operations can be performed. HoTMetaL's rules-checking feature ensures users create valid HTML documents and its previewing capability allows documents to be previewed from within the user's browser of choice. * Doom from ID Software - Doom is the exciting 3D underground search and destroy game that took the web world by storm in recent years. Using state-of-the-art compression techniques and animation algorithms, the makers of Doom -- ID Software -- brought video arcade style graphics and performance to the PC for the first time. Now DOOM goes one better, and has been ported specifically for the Sun Graphics architecture: DGA. This version, called "DGA SunDoom", is the fastest, highest resolution version of Doom you will find anywhere. It includes multi-player network support and runs especially well on the Ultrasparc Creator Graphics architecture. Try running at res level 4, you won't believe your eyes! * Adobe Acrobat Reader - Adobe(R) Acrobat (TM) software lets you create electronic documents from a wide range of authoring tools for sharing across different computer platforms, including Solaris, SunOS, HP-UX, Microsoft Windows, and Macintosh. Simply "print" your documents to the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and distribute them over a broad selection of electronic media, including the World Wide Web, electronic mail, Lotus Notes (R), or CD-ROM. From the simplest memos to the richest color brochures, Adobe Acrobat software lets you publish and manage your documents electronically, preserving their original look and feel, independent of computer platform or distribution media and without a large investment of time and money. * Faximum Fax Modem Software - Faximum Client/Server software provides a friendly fax client combined with a powerful fax server that will enable your UltraSPARC machine to provide fax services to your entire network effortlessly and efficiently. The graphical user interface lets users submit faxes from their workstations easily while the command-line interface makes it trivial for programmers to fax-enable their applications. Advanced features include forms overlay, least-cost route selection, and intelligent dialing, remote server administration, support for PostScript and Sun raster files, and many more. The Faximum product included here is a 30-day evaluation copy and is compatible with most Class 2 or 2.0 fax modems. System Requirements ------------------- * Ultra 1 or Ultra 2 system with Creator or Creator3D graphics * Solaris 2.5 * OpenWindows 3.5 or CDE 1.1 (For better display quality, it is possible to run in 24-bit visual mode - instructions for setting this display mode as your default are included on the CD.) * CD-ROM drive (or access to one) * 64MB of memory (adequate performance cannot be guaranteed with less memory than specified) * 2GB of disk space * 64MB of space in /tmp recommended * 64MB of swap space recommended * Audio device (internal or external speakers) Loading Instructions -------------------- * With File Manager running: Starting 1. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. 2. If running OpenWindows, File Manager will come up automatically. Double-click on the "run_demo" icon and when prompted, click "Run in a Shell Tool". 3. If running CDE, change directories to "/cdrom", and then "cdrom0" using File Manager. Double-click on "run_demo" and when the "Action:Run" dialog box comes up, simply click "OK". Ending 1. If running OpenWindows, click on the "Eject Disk" button in File Manager. 2. If running CDE, quit the demo interface. In a Shell Tool, type: % eject cd * Without File Manager running: Starting 1. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. 2. In a Shell Tool, log-in as root or super user. Ask your System Administrator if you need assistance. % su password: 3. As root user, type: # mount -rt hsfs /dev/sr0 /cdrom # exit % cd /cdrom % ./run_demo Ending 1. Make sure you are not in the /cdrom directory in any window, including File Manager. If you are, you will get the message "/cdrom: device busy" when you try to unmount the CD-ROM drive. 2. As root user, type: # umount /cdrom # eject /dev/sr0 # exit (c) 1996 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
